Christine's Story

I mostly grew up in Germany. I was born in Berlin, but at 1 yrs. we moved to Rockville, Maryland. At six we moved back to Germany. I didn't live in the States again until college. First & second grade I went to Hamburg International School, 3-6 I attended Berchtesgaden Elementary School. It only had a couple of school rooms and at most 36 students. It went from grades 1 to 8. In seventh grade we moved to Frankfurt where I attended Frankfurt American Junior High School and then Frankfurt HS in 10th grade. In 11th we moved to Taiwan. My father was stationed in Vietnam and my mother and I were closer to him in Taiwan. He got to come visit us every 6 weeks, but his tour was 6 months longer for it. I graduated from Taipei American School in 1973. Of the places I lived as a child I liked Berchtesgaden and Taipei the best, though I also made good friends in Frankfurt. After High School I started at the University of Washington in Seattle. My high school boyfriend, Eric Beattie, went to school at WSU in eastern Washington. He then moved to Seattle to be closer to me. After two quarters I decided to drop out of school and I wanted to hitch hike around America. (You did that kind of thing in 1974.) Instead, Eric's parent's talked us into getting married (so we could live in their house with his sister) and moving to Virginia. There I got a job at KMART--so instead of being footloose and fancy free, I was married and working in the grill at KMART! I started to attend community college and after a few moves around Virginia, we ended up at Virginia Tech. In the summer of 1...Expand for more
977 my marriage to Eric ended. A year later I met John Sunda. In 1979 I finally graduated from college and we moved to Vienna, Virginia, a suburb of DC. I got a job in administration for a large high school student exchange. In 1982 John and I married and have remained so for 34 years. In 1986 we bought a house in Centreville and have lived here now for 30 years. (So after a childhood of always moving, I've moved once since 1980.) After six years of infertility, I had my daughter, Michelle in 1990. I elected stay home with her and not return to the work force in a 9 to 5 way. I have earned money as a gardener and as an organizer. I am now the main care giver for my 93 year old father who lives independently in a condo. I have spent the last twenty six years doing a lot of volunteer work from Girl Scout leader for 12 years to landscaping chair at the public schools, to for the last 10 years maintenance chair of my church along with a lot of other volunteer positions. My daughter is now graduated from college and lives with us as she continues to deal with her chronic Lyme disease. My husband and I live with our menagerie of 4 cats and one golden retriever in what feels like rural Virginia, but is minutes from suburbs and about 27 miles outside Washington, DC. I love keeping up with old friends and enjoy hearing from any of you. PS This summer I completed a bucket list I've had since when I missed seeing the Beatles in Salzburg in the 60's (parent's wouldn't let my sister and I go to the airport where they were arriving to film Help) and saw Paul McCartney in concert!
