Christine's Story
Life
After high school I attended Davenport College in Merrillville IN. I graduated in December 1990 with a certificate in Travel & Tourism. That Christmas I traveled to New Mexico to spend the holidays with Cory and his family but shortly after returning home the reality of a long distance relationship took it's toll on us and we broke up shortly after. The rest of 1991 found me doing occasional nanny work for family friends for their 3 kids. (something I had the pleasure of doing for the next 10 yrs - watching the baby grow into a wonderful kid - she is now a beautiful 18 year old young lady who will be attending Northwestern this fall) As well as building a new group of friends outside of high school.
In 1992 my dad passed away and due to our strained relationship in the last couple years of his life (which only got worse in his last days) I legally had my name changed back to my mother's maiden name - Lundgren.
In March of 1993 as soon as my name change became legal I packed what I could fit into my car and my mom helped me drive out to California where I tried my hand at being a live-in nanny for a few weathly families out there. I initially stayed with my mom's best friend from high school and her family until I found my first position. That part ended up being the most fun and postive part of the experience. I quickly learned that my experience with the Rieser family was something I would never find anywhere else so I headed back home after 6mos and started working for them again as needed ASAP! lol (I also came back just in time to miss the Northridge earthquake by only a couple mos. where the epicenter had been only a couple miles from my first job out there)
In the spring of 1994 I went back to school attending Columbia College in Chicago as a Musical Theater major. Commuting from CP to Chicago. I absolutely LOVED it. I found going to school at 23 a lot more fun than it was right out of high school plus I was doing what I always wanted to do -...Expand for more
music and theater.
I managed to get 3yrs towards my BA when my parents decided they were going to move to Cape Coral Florida.
So at the end of the fall semester in January of 1997 I dropped out and began looking for a FT job. (I had NO intention of leaving CP and moving to Florida) In March I started working for AAA-Chicago Motor Club. I really liked my job but a year after my parents left, CP was hit (well NW Indiana) with a major snowstorm and needless to say being snowed in as an adult is not as much fun as it was as a kid. Especially with no power - nothing. That was when I seriously started to consider moving to Florida and joining my parents.
By fall I had decided I was going to make the move. I already had tickets to spend Christmas there so I started to job hunt while I was there. A couple months after I got here I got a job out on Captiva Island working for South Seas resort as a Concierge. I lived on property in employee housing so it took care of both my job and living situation. I eventually transferred to resort operator for a while as well. I really enjoyed the job but after a while being out on the island just became too isolated and I decided to head back to that 'mainland'. lol We've been lucky and made it through Hurricane Charley & Tropical Storms Frances, Ivan & Jean in 2004 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005 with very little damage. For the last 18 mos I've been working for Publix Supermarkets the #1 chain in FL. I started at a cashier but have been in the bakery now for 7mos. I've recently transferred to the newest store in our area. We opened on my birthday December 15th and I'm now a Baker's Apprentice. In 2 weeks the company will have to 'officially' make me FT since I've been working 40 hours (my other store was famous for dropping you below 35 hrs for a week to keep you from gaining FT status) for at least 6 weeks since the New Year (more if the 2 weeks counted before the new year but of course they didn't) But I'm loving it.
