Christine's Story

My husband, Tom Van Doren is a retired Asst. Chief of Police. We have four children plus one each from previous marriages, nine grandchildren, nine cats-indoors only, some fish in our seven hand made ponds and some guppies in an aquarium. I'd love to have a dog again so I'm nagging Tom weekly to get me one. So far all I get is a quiet, rather automated "no". We live in the country in North Texas, half way between Dallas and Oklahoma. We have two and a quarter acres so there's plenty of room for gardening. There are cow pastures (with cows) on three sides of our one quarter mile long neighborhood. It's nice and quiet except at sundown when the coyotes start to howl. There is also a couple donkeys down the road that likes to chime in from time to time. Three of our neighbors have goats-some new fad I guess. Our next door neighbor has a pony, chickens and two PET cows. Yep, we live in the country! Around here it's called living "out in the county". We love it!! When I first left my home town, a few years after high school, I moved to Dallas, Texas. After a couple years there we moved to Pennsylvania. I did not like my part of PA! There was no sun shine, well, very little anyway. From there I moved to Atlanta, Georgia and married Tom. Atlanta was nice then but still too crowded. We moved to Texas for Tom's job promotion and lived near Dallas. It was nice at first but then, once again we f...Expand for more
elt crowded all the new community growth, so we packed up our four little kids and moved them to the country. Both Tom and I had close childhood ties to country life. Since then our kids are grown and have homes of their own. Our two girls complain often about their country upbringing, one son often comments on how much he loved it and our other son doesn't talk about it much...he just keeps moving closer and closer to Dallas. We don't feel too badly about the kids not all liking their country childhoods--the grand kids all love it here and want to come often. Of course the kids do have to come back when they bring the grand children and now that the kids are all grown up and have hectic lives, they are beginning to see some of the pleasures of a nice day in the country. Tom and I ran an antique business for a some years but with his continual failing health it became too difficult to continue with it. Now we just enjoy the antiques we've kept and add to our collections from time to time. All four of our children live within a couple hour or so of us. Our older two--both "boys" are in their 40s now, have families and live on the west coast. Each loves their respective present home states. Now my kids are trying to teach me Facebook. Do you think I'm too old to learn? That's about it for what I've been up to since my teen years. You can bet I'll post right away if I ever get a dog.
