Christine's Story

Life Basically, Ive lived a lot of places - Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, UK, Rwanda, South Africa, Italy... spoken a lot of languages (or tried to), eaten some really interesting, sometimes scary food and done a little good work for a pittance, made some colorful mistakes and made a difference in a handful of lives. Have developed an ecclectic if not bizarre palate of sorts: -tastes in food leaning twd Thai/Japanese/Mexican/Indian/Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean -world music fusion (Bangra, medieval, swing, African & Dixie jazz, what my mother affectionately calls whiners or female vocalists like Vonda Shepard & Dulce Pontes) -foreign, indie films, bollywood -and oodles of printed bits (The Sun creative arts mag, Shambala Sun buddhist, short stories, history esp ancient, abraham-hicks, rumi) Have hobbies like gardening, jewelry-making, creative writing, cooking, when, that is, I manage to pry myself away from work. Tend to do most things to excess, embracing the essentials of my ethnic heritage - travel like a Polish refugee, entertain & lose my temper like an Italian. En fin, biographical keywords would be something like: gypsy, adventurer a-la-pippi longstocking, liberal, global citizen, Renaissance woman, satisfied but still seeking. School Memorable moments: failing chemistry (one day perhaps I will repent not having memorized the periodic table…), humanities & creative writing classes and their applications, some amazing & gifted teachers and friends that crossed my path, clubbing at lunch time for a good cause, the sheer and utter joy of opting for ‘adult school’ and not having to deal with a graduation ceremony or the prom, ah. College Completed the college buffet program option went all over and enjoyed learning what I wanted, somehow managing to pull together a degree, small miracles do happen. Schools Ive attended… Ecuatoriano Mixto (Quito, Ecuador), Reading Area Community College (Reading, PA), University of Barcelona (Spain), World College West (Petaluma, CA), University of Morelia (Mexico), Toledo & Gasset Foundation, Toledo (Spain), University of Barcelona (Spain), Grossmont Community College,(San Diego, CA)…leading to a degree from the University of the State of New York (the one school which I never attended)…then on to University of California (San Marcos, CA) and wrapping up with the School for International Training. now and am feeling pretty free and proud of myself and debt-free lifestlye. Workplace I worked during HS, remember the monster cookies at The Big Chipper? Worker all thru college as well. After HS spent a year in Ecuador studying abroad and was inspired to go on to study cultural anthropology & Hispanic studies. I did my field work in Mexico focusing on rural education, with the National Institute of Adult Education, promoting adult literacy and working with children - learned a lot about poverty, privilege and women. Went on to finish school at the University of Barcelona in Spain, found my -media naranja- (code for married) and perched there for the next 6 years working as a corporate business trainer, wonderful times good conversation, good wine, good company. But decided to follow my passions and get back into what I loved doing which meant flying solo again (code for divorced), working for and with the poor and disadvantaged. So I came back to the US to complete my graduate work. Hung out in DC, working briefly with USAID on diversity training for their senior management. Then spent a year in rural Vermont at the School for International Training. Got a fellowship to work in South Africa for an NGO called Africare, managing a youth internship and training project for agricultural enterprise development. Finally managed to finish my thesis on farmer empowerment and social movements, completing a degree in international management & training for sustainable development programs which focuses on long-term impact, as opposed to immediate relief efforts. From there went on to work with IRC (another NGO) in Rwanda coordinating programs and doing grants management. Came back to the US for a sabbatical and worked briefly in San Diego promoting literacy and education in disadvantaged Latino communities. Spent a stint in New York with Medecins du Monde and Arkansas at Heifer International, then on to PA to connect with family, ended up doing bilungual media relations for the legislature, go figure. Just got back from 5 months working on organic farms in Italy to fine-tune the italiano and am looking for some fun sand box to play in for a living, ideally filled with crisp green notes. I'm searching for an olive farm in the Med somewhere (Spain,Italy...) and planning on moving back to Europe in the next year or so when my citizenship comes thru. As you can see, I'm still abnormal and a blabber mouth, there you go, history repeats itself.
