Christine's Story
In 1963, I was literally the only minority in Granada Hills High. I am American born to a Mother that came from China and settled in Madison, Wi and a Dad that was born here in California as was my Grandfather. At that time., Granada Hills High was the only High School in North Valley. Kennedy was not built and my younger brother (by 10 yrs) was the first class to go all 3 yrs at the newly built Kennedy High. At that time there were Winter Class Seniors that graduated in Jan. That is my class, Winter January 1966. We actually had school buses that pick us up close to our homes surrounding the Knollwood golf course and other areas. I was an Art Major and loved my Spanish classes. I was a "Class" cheerleader...not the "School" but just out Senior Class named after an Indian Tribe, Darugars and our class color was yellow. s were very small and we were stuck inbetween the much larger summer class of 1965 and Summer of 1966. That class after us went onto the very first group of a double session. It was part of the largest class of students graduating out of the San Fernando Valley. But graduating in January was starge enough. I went right from High School to being a freshman at UCLA. After more than 30 yrs (school and working for UCLA) I am now in San Diego, where my only child resides, and I have a nice retirement type job 4 days a week that gives me the luxury of just having to be nice and helpful. No FIRES to be put out like my job at UCLA. Hope my classmates are well and happy!!!
UCLA Rieber Hall Dorm. Nothing like turning 18 and you're already in college with yoour underwear in the trees. And, we were at the begining of the '70s. That's wild enough.
