Christine's Story

LIFE Even though when I was in high school, I was told by the doctors that I wouldn't be able to have children, my body "knew" that I needed children in my life. Therefore, I now have a son, 11, and a daughter, 9. My son, Kevin, is very much like I was in school - right on target and very smart. My 9 year old, is just beginning 4th grade, so we'll see how that goes. She likes school but for the wrong reasons...she likes it so she can visit with her friends! Not to learn! And at the age of 9, she isn't understanding that having social skills isn't going to get her far in life! I can say though, that at least she's at grade level on all of her studies. I am married, to my husband, Jay. We've been together for 18 years - been married for 13 years. Seeing that Jay is in the Military, we had to leave CA, and move to his present duty station, which is Ft. Hood, Texas. We will be stationed here for at least the next 3 years. I am currently a stay at home mom, which I am hoping is soon to be changing to an employed member of society! But, as it stands right now, when the kids are in school, and Jay is at work, I spend most of my day up at our Super Wal-Mart socializing with either the door greeters or else with the other regular customers that are there more than 3 times a day, like me! Yes, I have to get a better hobby, I agree! Which leads me to my next paragraph! A JOB? Well, with much determination from myself, and the self motivation of wanting to find a job instead of the non-paid socializer activity I do at Wal-Mart, I applied to the Killeen School District for a Special Ed. Aide position. I went in last week, and took the test, and I had to wait until yesterday, Monday, to call and find out my scores and it looks like I'm stepping up in the world.....Keep your fingers crossed, pleased! I guess I could update you....I got called in for an interview in March of 2010, and was hired as a Special Education Teachers Assistant. I absloutely love the position. However, I don't believe a few of my co-workers appreciate me, therefore I have asked to change my position. The position I have asked to move to is working as a Pre-K Aide. I've been working here fore a couple of months and I truly do love it! There are days when it gets to be a little challenging....but with the terrific suport I have from my teacher, we get the job done! She and I make a GREAT team! Well, I am now giving you an update: today is August 16, 2011, and I had to quit my job on June 4, 2011, when school let out for the 2010-11 school year. The reason for that was because we thought we were moving in September. WRONG! Oh well. I was able to have the knee surgery that I needed badly. I had my ACL replaced in my right knee on August 5, and it is healing quite well. However, the doctors say that I still cannot drive for 6-8 weeks! That's Murder! That hurts a person especially when I'm normally used to going to Wal Mart (my favorite place on earth) at least 3 times a day! Oh well, guess their profits will be decreasing in the near future but hold tight - by December, I'll be up and running again! Not literally....you get the picture, just shopping, and making sure Wal-Mart gets back on its toes! SCHOOL The teacher that inspired me the most....there were a few. One, was my first grade teacher, Miss. Brown, from Terrace Elementary, in Riverside. Then, there was my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Turner, whom, I still to this day, love dearly, and then there was my sixth grade teacher, Mr. Obermeyer, who made learning an adventure and fun. Then, there were just some great teachers I had in high school. The first four that come to mind are Ms. Williams, Mrs. Doshier, Mrs. Hert, and one of my Math teachers, who was a long-term substitute, Dave Atkins. He was really funny, down to earth, said what was on his mind, and if you didn't like the way it sounded, well, then you were the one at fault for listening! Dave was cool! Thanks Dave for all you did for me in 9th grade! If it weren't for you, I may have really ended up in a psychiatric ward! Thanks though, you helped save me! CHILDHOOD MEMORIES There are a few childhood memories I'll never forget. One is every evening sitting out underneath the street light with Kim, Tom & Chere' & maybe some others, and we would usually sit out there for 30 minutes to an hour or more talking, laughing, and joking with eachother about the day or anything, really. Those were the days! Another is almost every afternoon in the 1986-87 school year, Chere', Kim and I, after school walked up to Del Taco to hang out and then on the way home we would go over and see Jeff, Eric, Roman, & Dale and hang out with them for a while. It was cool. THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE Most people have fond memories of their high school years, but unfortunately, since my accident happened right before my eighth grade graduation...Expand for more
, and I now have what is called Short Term Memory Loss, I really don't remember too much about my high school days. The best years of my life were my Jr. High years! I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right.. I am now a Pre-K Aide, which I really enjoy, even though there are times when I want Calgon to just take me away But it never works!, I guess that means I was the one meant for this Job! Most people....when they go to a store, they BUY clothes or groceries or other needed items. Not Christine Hocker! When I am either bored or want to blow off steam, I go to our Super WalMart, and talk to the workers (which most of them are my friends) and I sit in the McDonalds and joke around with the workers whom are also my friends. When I show up at McDonalds anymore I don't even have to order. They already know what I want! A large carmel frappe, and a large drink...that'll be $4.54 please! WHO WOULD I LIKE TO SEE? The one person from my past whom I'd most like to see again is Maria Fernandez/Angle. I know this is not her name anymore, as she has since gotten married, but she and I lived nextdoor to eachother on Rutland Ave. in Riverside, back in the '70s and I remember DeDee's Mom, Trudi and Nana and even 'lil Adrianna, oh yes, and Uncle Tim too! I've lost contact with you after I had to suddenly leave your wedding (sorry) because it was that day that I found out that I was pregnant! I was having "morning sickness" when we were about to have the food. IMPROVEMENTS If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the backyard and add on a guest house. My dream home would be on 2 acres of land. LEARNED FROM KIDS? What have I learned from my kids? I've learned that just because I was one way in school does not mean that is how they are going to be...even with the most discipline and direction, they have to learn their own way! $1 MILLION DOLLARS If I won $100 million, I'd split $50,000. of it between Kevin & Elizabeth, get a car for each of them, put about $1 miliion in for retirement money for me & Jay and of course, the rest would go to helping those in need. Mainly flood victims or the disabled. My current age is 38. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be grumpy, wrinkly, and mean. I was so completely wrong...to an extent. You're only that way if you ALLOW yourself to become that way! Stay young, Be vibrant! Be cheerful! And the best advice of all, use some kind of facial cream to smooth out those wrinkles!. I share my home with my husband and children and 4 legged wanna be husband, which I find comfortable but too close for comfort at times!. My first job was at Castle Park, where I got paid $6.75 to "man" the miniature golf desk. What I remember most about it is just asking people how many people were going to be golfing, and taking their money!. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I hope my friends remember me as being polite, cherrful, silly when necessary, and a great friend! They could always depend on me, could ALWAYS talk to me and I always had time to listen, be it with a problem with me, or a personal problem of their own. When I wanted to blow off steam, if I was at home, I would go into my room, shut the door, turn my radio on, and then just start writing/scribbling on paper. I now do the same thing but instead of having the privacy of going into my room, I just scribble or write on paper backwards. Kind of like if I'm dyslexic. That is a side affect from the accident. Even though I can write backwards, I can also write the correct way. UPDATE: September 13, 2014 Well, I have come to the realization that I AM getting older! My 16 year old son, Kevin, got his drivers license on July 16, 2014, and is now driving a car on his own!!! OH MY GOSH! He is a very careful driver, however, which is a good thing! And then my 14 year old daughter, Elizabeth, started high school this year! Gosh do I feel super old! She is continuing on with her Dancing again this year. For those of you who aren't in Texas, the Dancing Elizabeth does, is kind of like a cross between cheer-leading and flag-twirling (except without the flags). She attends all of the sporting events that the high school has going on, they will be in parades, and there are even competitions that she has to attend. So it's pretty important. In case you don't know this, I am no longer a Special Ed. Aide. I am now a Sp. Ed. Bus Monitor. I absolutely LOVE my new job! The hours are perfect....I am able to take a break during the day and come home and relax and catch up on some needed sleep or just hang out at Wal Mart if I want, until it is time for me to go back to work! I will continue with more later, but I now have to get going......
