Christine's Story

** UPDATE AT END 07.29.09 ** Life Hello Everyone! I haven't kept in touch with anyone from HS. I guess it would just be nice to see what everyone is up to these days, even if I cant remember half of you! LOL Ok so here is a very brief version of the past 15 years of my life: I have worked several decent jobs since HS, including running a high-end warehouse for 5.5 years and working as a Workers' Comp Collector for another 3.5 years. I also did taxes for H&R Block till I couldn't stand working for them any longer (4 years) and decided to start my own tax business. I had my own small business for three years till I started doing collections and also went to school. About 4 years ago I decided I wanted to go back to school. I had tried college for a month or so at GWC after graduating HS and I hated it so I quit. I just didnt know what I wanted to do. The past 4 years, I have been working full time doing collections and also going to Cypress College part time in the evenings. I got to the point where the math classes were getting harder and harder and I couldnt take any science classes because of the labs, so I knew it was time to quit my job and go to school full time. I decided to major in Physics (because I am crazy) and because I just want to learn how things work! I am fascinated with science, math, the earth and weather systems and I want to eventually work as a research scientist in the field of Geophysics. So I decided I wanted to go to the University of Alaska Fairbanks because they have one of the best Physics programs in the country; I applied and was accepted (I had a 4.0 so I wasnt worried LOL). So, I took out student loans and this past August I packed my things and drove up here! I am now attending UAF and living on campus in the dorms and loving school! I know I have sure changed a lot since HS but thats what life is all about, the progress you make as a human being. I am looking forward to...Expand for more
getting to know some of you better and seeing what you have all done with your lives. I know I am late at going to college, but better late than never I guess! In 10 years I might still be working on my Masters degree, but I will still be 10 years older, so I might as well get a degree or two along the way and learn about all the things I am so curious about anyways! :) Since we cant post our personal info on here, I will just say that you can find me on Facebook! ** UPDATE 07.29.09 ** It's been two years appx. since I wrote this and a lot has happened. I am still happily living in Fairbanks, AK and attending school. I have switched my major to Geological Engineering because I found it better suits my interests and love of science and nature. I LOVE the program here, it is one of the best anywhere in the country, so I am fortunate UAF specializes in both hard applied sciences AND engineering so I don't have to switch schools. I have an amazing advisor who specializes in frozen ground engineering and permafrost, and I am currently working for her and have been since Jan 2009. I am doing research for a Dept. of Transportation (DOT) project for her which is both fascinating and challenging, and giving me hands on experiences which will surely be useful in the future. I love what I do and know that this work is important and useful. Last year I met an amazing man who I am currently dating. Billy and I have been dating since 11.03.08 and are very happy together. He is a structural engineer at one of the top engineering firms in Fairbanks, and shares my love of the outdoors and outdoor activities. Overall, I am very satisfied and happy with my life. Of course it is not easy being a full time engineering student, but then again, the best things in life usually are difficult to attain, and I know it will be worth it. It is the journey that counts, and I believe in working hard and playing hard. :)
