Christopher D.'s Story

Life I left Bloomington in August, 1984 and pretty much never looked back. I moved to Minneapolis and basically tossed out all thoughts of the fictitious road map that we all attempt to follow. I attended college at the University of Minnesota, graduated and then became a Gopher employee as well. I am currently a Fiscal Officer at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Experience, walking the planet and knowledge has always called out to me and it has done me well. I have eaten whale in Norway to snake in China, I have jumped out of airplanes to climbing the steps to the roof of the Arc de Triomphe while carrying my daughter, I have spoken French in Italy, Swedish in England and used Vietnamese at a conference in Milwaukee. Now the chapters of my life are concentrated on my family. I am married and we have two children. What I have learned since moving on can now be found with my children as well and life is brand new once again. Update: Rather slim in terms of movement other than I have been playing cricket, started foil fencing and now have found the need to acquire another language besides francais et sverige because my son attends an immersion school...time for more coffee? Update II: Took the family to India, taught art lessons and worked at a medical NGO. We also went to Mexico, brought shoes and toys for the Mayans and homeless. Visited London once again, numerous trips to this city have been taken but this time for a wedding. Teaching myself how to read Mandarin. Volunteering with foreign students at the U of M, also working with an Africa NGO via the UN Volunteer program Update III...also working with an India NGO via the UN Volunteer program. Love getting lost in Tokyo metro stations... Update IV...Visited Puerto Rico, mostly for the sake of holiday but also brought donations. Walked the streets of Stockholm, Sweden; gotta love being able to watch European football at night opposed to early Saturday/Sunday mornings in the USA. Min Svenska was very rusty. One kid in college and one in high school....handful of years until long term and/or permanent travel. Update V...all I can say is thank God for London. ick pint. Boxing Day footy fans are the best. Took family members to Stonehenge, first time for some. Update VI..Greece and Taiwan in the past year or so. Spoke a little Mandarin in Taipei and Greece was all about visiting UNESCO sites. Our daughter graduated from college early, the pocket book is happy. Barcelona in August 2019...needed to catch some English Premier League matches at a foreign pub. Update VII...COVID-19 has gripped the world. As bags were packed, and we were about to leave MSP for Panama to review future retirement options. COVID-19 put a stop to international travel. Spending time remote working, watching New Zealand rugby at 2:00 am, spending time with the UN Volunteer program, practicing Swedish and Vietnamese while forgetting how to speak French. Update VIII June, 2021. Rode horses in the Andes. Hiked the volcanic and mountain ranges. My wife and I hung out in Quito, Ecuador for a little. The daily wakeup routine of doing a 100 pushups in the morning gets challenging once the elevations is over 10K feet. It was the first trip since Covid-19. Vietnamese language skills improved, I prefer 'tieng viet cho emails'. Coffee is now my only vice. Update IX May, 2022. With borders opening up, my wife and I were able to enjoy the shores of Croatia and walk the streets of Monaco. Visited various UNESCO sites in Europe, quickly had to acquire a limited Indonesian vocabulary and, both my wife and I, have made great progress leaning the Vietnamese language. Update X August, 2023. My wife and I spent sometime in Da Nang, Vietnam; visited UNESCO sites, spoke Vietnamese whenever possible and did our best to get lost just for the sake of adventure. Our son has been living in Tokyo, Bangkok and now is in Eastern Europe. Our daughter works in the naturalist field, following her passion. Update XI May 2024 Revisited Hong Kong and then explored Bangkok; UNESCO sites visited, retraced the steps taken with my father from years back, and received a Sak Yant tattoo(Thai bamboo stick traditional tattoo). Found myself attempting to speak Vietnamese, we did our best with limited Mandarin and Thai. Other than that, it’s just black coffee and staying healthy…life of a simple man.
