Christopher's Story
I attended the College of William and Mary after graduating from FHS, where I earned a BS in Biology and a terminal love for theater and music. I graduated in 1979 .
I returned to Washington DC area to work, first in Meloy Laboratories in a genetic engineering research lab ( I was a disaster : I dropped things! Radioactive and carcinogenic things! It was a far cry from the fascinating world of college lectures... and not for me. ) and then for 3 years in telephone sales for ITT World Communications ( I sold telex services - this was before email and fax machines! Those new fangled devices ruined our business during my three years there ! ). All the while I sang in a professional chorus in DC ( the Paul Hill Chorale ) , and then was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera competition in DC. This was the fork in my proverbial road : I eventually quit ITT, and worked with Arena Stage for a few productions ( Candide, Happy End, etc ) and the chorus of the Washington Opera, plus a church job and the Paul Hill Chorale.
Then ... I left DC in 1984 to begin my training as an apprentice and the Lake George Opera Festival in NY, and Tri Cities Opera in Binghamton New York ( where I lived for 6 years, sang many roles with the company and earned a Masters of Music degree in 1986 )... This was one of the happiest periods of my life as I was actively pursuing my dream of solo singing and had lots of opportunities for performance with the company.
In 1989 I was taken on by agent Judith Liegner in NYC and soon thereafter moved into Manhattan and began my 6 years of solo singing throughout the US ( + Toulon, France - Wexford, Ireland - Giessen, Germany ). Highlights included a performance of Carousel at the Houston Opera for President George Bush ( the senior ), performing Barber of Seville for the educational program of the Metropolitan Opera, 3 concerts at Carnegie Hall with Eve Queler's group, Albert Herring with the Glimmerglass Opera in upstate New York ( one of my favorite roles ),...Expand for more
and many happy memories from numerous houses and productions and colleagues and cities.
After 7 years, I found that the solo singing life was not for me.. I was unsatisfied with the development of my singing and was suffering from not really having a "home" anywhere. In any case, I "retired" from singing in 1995, and my temp job between opera gigs at the help desk of Goldman Sachs bank become long term ( but still temp ), plus I sang in 2 churches and a synagogue and pick up choruses in Manhattan. I was going nowehere, but I was content.
In Dec 1995 I met my partner Fausto in NYC while he was on vacation ( yes, he : pretend you are surprised eh eh eh ). We had a long distance relationship develop ( between Manhattan and Milan - thanks to a now vanished travel option called "courier flights " - I could fly round trip NYC < > Milan for 200 USD !) and then, fate intervened. He met a friend in Milan who knew of openings in the chorus of the Zürich Opera, might I be interested? I took the audition in Nov of 1997, and was engaged to start work Feb 1 1998. I quickly closed my apartment in NY and prepared for a new life in Europe.
It is hard to believe I have been in Zürich now for 15+ years. I became Swiss in 2011, and Fausto and I registered as partners in November of that year ...
For the most part, I love my life here in Zürich. It is a privilege to be able to make a living singing, and to have the job security promised in the Swiss work system ( I try to be optimistic ) - we are here until retirement at age 65! Of course, singing in the chorus is not nearly as rewarding as solo singing, but at least I did have that experience before so am not really as bitter as if I had never done it. I struggle with the language ( German here, Italian at Fausto's ), but all in all it was a great change and I do not anticipate returning to the US to live.
I am home every summer for 2-3 weeks In January / February, and again in Jul or Aug to visit my parents in Fairfax ...
