God bless all you wonderful mothers on this special day!" By Christopher Ledesma Today was a special day...my wife, Suzy Greenhoe Ledesma and were on our way to her parents. We happened to stop by a flea market. She picked up something special and she called me over and I looked at it. It was a shoeshine box. As my eyes saw the shoeshine box, it brought back alot of memories of my childhood. Just a few days ago, we experienced the day that my mom left us a few years ago to go ...to a better place. Once again, I looked at the shoeshine box that affected me with memories of how we survived and how close we were as a family. It also brought back memories of how I spent special times with my brothers and sisters, and how we came together to help our mother pay the bills. My sisters would babysit and my brothers and I would spend time together shining shoes. We would spend Fridays and Saturdays up and down Bridge Street and Division Ave in Grand Rapids, in and out of bars shining shoes for a quarter. Remembering the days my brothers and I spent time making money shining shoes to help mom feed our family of 7 kids. But the most important thing I remember, as I look at the shoeshine box, is how close my brothers and I were and more importantly how close we were as a family. As we got ready to leave the flea market, my wife offered to buy the shoeshine box for me. It brought tears to my eyes, and owning that box allowed me to hold on to those memories.
