Christopher's Story

Life Like many of you, my life is extremely full right now as my wife Shelley and I raise our 2 boys, Garrison & Ethan. I still work a bit, but as the owner of a small, home-based Graphic Design business that I started in 1997, I have a lot of time available for our kids. We basically have a ball all day while my wife, who is an attorney, deals with the world of adults. When she gets home, I either go up to my office to deal with our business or I go meet with potential clients over dinner. Sometimes I play tennis and now that I'm in my 30's I've found it to be the best way for me to get in a workout and socialize (I love Golf but who's got the time?). My graphic design background is in package formulation for the wine and spirits business so I've been able to make my love for wine and food a productive business. I design wine labels and packaging and also deal with the day-to-day brand management issues associated with my clients businesses. Most importantly, however, I'm the free safety for our family and get to dick-off with our kids more than any guy I know! I count my blessings every day and love my family very much. I hope you all have found the same kind of balance and joy in your lives... Cheers! School So after all these years, I still think of 5 girls from high school (KF, SU, ST, LG & DF) that I had huge crushes on at one point or another in my life - some in school, some after. Kelly Drew was, and always will be, my high-school sweetheart but our class was full of beautiful, smart women. For fear of retribution, I don't want to talk any more about the girls I just mentioned, but I can hardly wait to see them at our 20 year reunion!!! As for teachers that still hold a warm spot in my heart, Mrs. Jan Meeker, who sadly passed away a few years ago from Cancer, holds the top spot for me. She was a wonderful, bright woman who loved all of us and taught us to be men and women of honor and courage. As for funny stories, I still can't beat the one about Chuck Byrnes' and his homecoming horse. We all were working on our homecoming float at Carolyn Zelletti's dad's warehouse when Chuck pulled up on his brother's horse like a wild eyed cowboy! Of course we were in town and I think Chuck figured a horse might be an interesting way to get some play with the girls that were in attendance. It did, but moments after tying the horse to a pole, it spooked and ended up bolting across Colfax Avenue at rush hour, getting hit by a car and dying in the Winchell's Donut House parking lot. We all heard about it while looking for it in Jan Meeker's car over the traffic report on the radio. Chuck called his Dad and when we got there a tow truck was towing the horse into the parking lot and Chuck's dad was just getting out of his car. He saw Byrnes and screamed his head off at him. They got the horse loaded up to take off somewhere and we all went back to building the float, since the parade was the next day. That weekend (homecoming), Chuck invited a few of us over to play pool at his house since he was grounded. Dave Hansen, Greg Sadar, Martin Schwab, Scott Sunderland and I got some beer and went over. All of a sudden hundreds of people started showing up because each one of us told someone else where we'd be and Chuck's backyard was full of people by 9:00. That night turned into one of the best Kegger Parties that I've ever been too!!! Dave Hansen and I...Expand for more
, drunk and needing to relieve ourselves went out behind Chucks garage to take a leak and sure as day, there's the dead horse, legs up and covered by a blue tarp!!! Dave and I fell over ourselves laughing we were so shocked to see it. We all ended up barfing that night and I got grounded myself for staying out past midnight. I wonder what happened to the horse after that? God we all loved Byrnes!!! Chuck was and is one of the funnest guys I've ever met! College So I really did leave home to attend Penn State after high-school but after a year and a half as a Nittony Lion, I had to re-think my college education. I loved school, loved the Architecture program at Penn State, but I ran out of cash and was scared to death about borrowing money for school. So what I did was head to Alaska, where I had some family, and I fished on salmon boats to make some money. After a summer up there I regrouped and took some classes at CU Denver while working as a land surveyor. Feeling the grind, and making very little headway with school, I realized that a little fun and opportunity existed if I took a leap of faith. Over beers I talked Dave Hansen into moving up to Winter Park with me. We got jobs at Winter Park/Mary Jane and decided we'd do school again later. We rented a great house in Frazier, but in February the plumbing exploded and the dream was over. We took our paychecks and headed for San Diego, CA. Greg Sadar moved out after hearing about it and then Scott Sunderland came out. We all enrolled in Junior Colleges and Sadar eventually became a cop. Sunderland bailed after a year to go get married to a girl he fell in love with before he left home, and Dave and I decided to stay and go to San Diego State University. We met a couple of girls who broke our hearts and then eventually I met my wife to be. Dave decided he was done with San Diego and took off for Aspen/Glenwood Springs, CO. I dug in solo and after 13 years of higher-education, I finally graduated from San Diego State University with 234 semester units and a smile on my face. I ended up with a BA in Economics, an AA in Real Estate and a student loan that even bankruptcy won't wipe out! I should have met with a councilor!!!! Workplace Since high school I've done a ton of stuff to get through school and evolve professionally. I was a land surveyor in Colorado, I worked on a fishing boat in Alaska, I was a lift attendant at a ski area, I was a construction laborer and drywall intaller, I managed an import/export warehouse in San Diego, waited tables and bartended at a fancy steakhouse, was a real estate broker, freelance writer, newspaper columnist, and finally the owner of a web development firm. My first love and what I still do today is graphic design and marketing consulting. My last job working for someone else was for a winery where I was the National Sales Manager. Overall, I've had a wonderful time learning about life, owning my own business, and meeting people, but I'm burned out on Internet oriented design and ready to get back into Architectural & Interior design. My hope is that by changing focus a little bit I can work internationally and still keep my family together. To that end, my plan is to get certified in Interior Design, focus on commercial & industrial design for my winery clients, and live the dream. Military I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier. Peace out!
