Chuck's Story

After my illustrious academic career at Foster (?), I found myself unable to sit in a classroom. There were just too many adventures to be had out in the big world. Climbing, sailing, and travel were all way more fun than college. Funny how learning the math for marine navigation was easier than learning the same math in order to meet a course requirement. Fortunately, I stumbled into a few jobs that gave me some skills that could be monetized, and that’s the way it went for a decade or so. Work long enough to finance the next adventure and then off we go. Eventually I ended up back in Seattle where I settled into a career with an environmental company. The work was rewarding but it was still work and I bailed out at the earliest opportunity. This June marks the ten-year anniversary of my retirement. Along the way, I was married twice and divorced twice. The bright spot being a couple of step kids that continue to amaze me. And yes, I did finish college. More to check it off the list than as some sort of career ...Expand for more
move. It was fun and I highly recommend it, if you don’t have anything else to do. After a few too many winters in Western Washington I moved to one of my favorite places in the world, Costa Rica, where I’ve just built a house. The climate here has allowed me to incorporate lots of open space in the design, and I really enjoy being able to spend most of my time outdoors. The people here are great, I find them friendly and personable and quick to laugh. The food is exquisite. I’m still not sure what I’m going to do when I grow up, probably stick to the formula that’s worked so far. That is, hang out some place comfortable until the next adventure presents itself and then go for it. Actually, I think I’ve already settled on the next adventure. I think I’ll go back to Seattle for my 50th high school reunion. I’ve got some old friends I haven’t seen in a very long time. I was unable to make arrangements to be there in time for the Friday night party but I will be at Bill’s house on Saturday. Hope to see you there.
