Chuck's Story
After graduation, I worked a number of odd jobs. I worked as a janitor, sold shoes, worked as a welder and I worked for United Parcel Service. While working these jobs, I managed to get in enough classes to graduate from WSU in '77, by way of Pacific Lutheran, Highline Community College and UW. I graduated with a BA in Elementary Education and continued to work for United Parcel Service at night while I began subtitute teaching during the day.
I was married in '78 to my wife Mary(going on 33 years) and we moved to a small remote village in Alaska in '80 where I taught the younger grades. I was there for a couple years, but after starting a family, I decided that it would be easier to raise children in a little more conventional setting so I moved back to the lower 48.
I taught in a small farming town in Idaho (2nd. grade) for a year and then I moved to Darrington, WA in '85 where I taught 4th grade for a number of years and eventually taught grades 4-5-6 in the same room. I earned a Master's Degree in '90 through Western Washington. A few years ago I made a change and mov...Expand for more
ed up to Darrington's Middle School where I teach 7th and 8th grade.
Over the years my family has expanded Helen, my daughter was born while I was teaching in Alaska. 5 years later my son Chris was born here in Washington. 6 years ago I acquired a son-in-law, Corey who was a student of mine when he was a fourth grader and he now works with me as a member of our middle school faculty. And most recently I have become a grandpa Gracie (31/2) and Sophia (1).
Back in the year 2002, I was experiencing a little mid-life crisis syndrome. I bought some property on a lake nearby and began building a cabin. By scrounging, begging, keeping a careful eye on craigslist and becoming good friends with some of the local mill workers and loggers with heavy equipment; I finally, 8 years later, have nearly completed this project. My kids and grandkids spend a lot of time up there and I am planning on spending more time at "the lake" in the near future.
I haven't really stayed in contact with anyone from Evergreen, but if you remember me, drop me a line and say hi.
