Chuck's Story
Born in Wilmington at 368 W. 321st Street I attended Catskill Elementary and continued when my dad bought the apartments at 24812 S. Avalon Blvd. At the age of 8 my mom died and my sister, Deb and I were shipped off to our Aunt Rose Marie's for a semester while my dad decided to find a new wife and a new place to live and we ended up at 162 W 226th St. in Carson. 9 months later my dad made his final move to 1721 Bardale Avenue in San Pedro. I transferred to Taper Avenue Elementary, graduated to Dodson Jr. High (1966-1969) and then on to San Pedro High. I can't remember why I didn't attend the graduation or prom. I worked at the Shell station on the corner of Western Avenue & Park Western Drive during my senior year where I became night manager.
After graduation I started at L.A.T.T.C. I soon afterwards I felt forced to leave home and moved in with my girlfriend. Not long after that my draft status updated to 1H and figured I better join before I get drafted, so I opted for the Air Force to be close to a girl in Pensylvania (Debbie Bostdorf) who I never got to see. ing at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX; then to Chanute AFB in Rantoul, IL (Debbie's stop), and finally to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV. Most of my memories of that time are great. I was offered a honorable discharge at the end of the war and took it.
I moved back home until I could find a place to live and I got my job at Steve's Bicycle Shop back too. I moved around 11th & Centre in San Pedro, then near 4th & Cabrillo, then to O'Farrell & Gaffey. From there I met Robbie while working at Garret iResearch and moved around Praire Avenue & 147th Street in Hawthorne. I moved to Long Beach and then to Stanton, and then back to Long Beach, then to Torrance for 8 years with Virginia Turner and her son Anthony near Bort & Long Beach Blvd. We moved near Torrance Blvd & Madrid for a couple of months. Then I moved near Crenshaw Blvd. & Artesia Blvd. for 8 years before moving to Bogóta, Colombia in July of 1995.
I'd been writing to Martha Olivaros in Botóta for over 2 years when she said that there was a new kind of English institute opening and they were looking for people who didn't speak Spanish.
