Chuck's Story

After my Junior year in school I moved to Valparaiso, IN and shortly after that I went on active duty in the Navy. I went to Great Lakes, Illinois for Recruit training and Advanced training in Radar. In 1961 I left Great Lakes for my first Ship in San Diego California. I served aboard the USS Roger (DDR-876) for about 2 years. The ship departed the US for the Far East in January 1962. We visited Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan,Hong Kong and the Philippines. We returned to the States in July 62. In June 1963 the Rogers departed San Diego to go to Charleston SC. We made port calls in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, Jamaica, and Mayport Florida. Here I left the Rogers for my next duty station back in San Diego. I got a ride from a shipmate from Charleston to Savanna GA where I began hitchhiking I covered the southern part of the United States in 72 hours coast to coast. I was aboard the USS Braine (DD-630) from August 1963 to July 1967. I made 2 cruises to the Far East. In May 1964 I married my Wife Marge in San Diego CA. In 1965 my Daughter was born her name was Marilynn (named after my sister). My Son was born on January 1st 1967 and we named him Russell Wayne (he goes by Wayne today) In 1968 I transferred to the USS Ingersoll (DD-652) where in the summer of 1968 the ship departed for the Far East again. On October 6th of that year the ship received fire from shore guns in North Vietnam. We took several shrapnel holes in the ship but no causalities and no serious damage. Upon the ships return to San Diego I was transferred to Instructor school for 6 weeks and then on to Treasure Island, San Francisco CA for a 3 year tour as an Instructor at Radarman Class "A" school. when this tour was completed I was transferred to a Reserve destroyer USS Bridgett (DE-1024) home ...Expand for more
ported in Seattle, WA. I spent about 18 months on board until she was decommissioned. I was transferred to the Bridgett's replacement the USS Epperson (DD719) where I spent about a year before being transferred back to San Diego for my next assignment the USS Downes (FF-1070) This was an exciting assignment because this ship was a CNO Project Ship where we tested a variety of detection and weapons systems. In 1977 the Downes underwent a major overhaul the Long Beach CA shipyard. In 1978 I was transferred to the USS Barbey (FF-1088) also undergoing major overhaul in Long Beach. In February 1979 I was transferred to the US Naval Air Station at Whidbey Island, WA. I retired from the Navy in August 1981. We moved to Mount Vernon, WA. where my wife, 2 children and myself all attended Skagit Valley College. My Wife and myself received degrees in Mid-Management. From 1981 until 1984 I was an Isurance agent. My wife got work as an apartment manager. In 1984 I joined my wife full time in the apartment management role. We worked in this capacity until 1998 when my wife retired. I got a position with what is now Panasonic Avionics Corporation. based out of Bothell WA. This company supplies about 80% of the world's aircraft with inflight entertainment systems. I work as a senior coordinator for several areas. I will be 70 years old in January 2012 and at the present time I plan retire when I reach age 70. Marge and I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (Mormon Church) 7 years ago. We live in a double wide mobile home in Everett, WA. I addition to my regular job I also spend time restoring antique dolls. Marge's health is very poor at this point so she is limited in what she can do. This is a very brief scenario of my life. There is much more to tell
