Chuck's Story

Life Following graduation from Hoover, I worked in the construction field. I joined the the Fresno Fire Department in Oct. 1981. I was a firefighter for 3 yrs. then promoted to an engineer (engine driver)and worked in that capacity for 6 yrs. I became a paramedic in 1985 and continued working as a fire/medic for 11 yrs. During that time I reaquainted myself with some of my past school mates in need of my services. I graduated from college in 1986. I married and promoted to Fire Captain in 1990. I worked as a Fire Captain for 12 yrs before promoting to my present position as Fire Battalion Chief. As a Captain, I once again went back to school and became certified as a Hazardous Materials Responder. Who would have thought that those chemistry classes in Hoover would ever be used again. I am presently responsible for all emergency incidents for one half of Fresno. I am also the Response Coordinator of all Hazardous Materials and Terrorist events for this area. I work closely with numerous emergency response agencies. In the past, I would have thought that my dealings with the police department and FBI would have ended up with me behind bars, haha. My family life is wonderful. I have two great children and realized that exchanging partying for parenting was the best decision that I ever made. I spend alot of time traveling with my family and teaching / lecturing for work. If you ever come to Fresno, drop me a line.... I can probably get you or your kids pictures with fire engine or trucks. Well I guess that I need to update the bio, since I originally submitted this years ago (it is 2013). My eldest child turned 20 and she is getting ready to move into her first home. My son is in the eighth grade and lifting weights while competing on the water polo and diving teams. I don't know much about water polo but it looks pretty hard. The diving I do remember and those cold winter afternoons on the boards at Hoover are etched in m mind. I am still with the Fire Department although my duties have significantly increased, I am traveling to Washington D.C. and various other locations, multiple times, annually. I appears that some people think that I know how to improve our nation's preparedness to ...Expand for more
disasters. I have argued that just trying to walk down stairs at my age can be disasterous but they aren't biting. I have had an opportunity to meet quite a few interesting people that hold some very high level positions in government. I never would have imagined that my future would move in this direction. The memories of hanging out with friends and drinking a few beers after a football game, still bring a fond smile. I am not sure what I was thinking back in 2010, but I went back to school and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Columbia Southern University with a Bachelor's Degree. I am actually considering applying to the Naval Post Graduate School to complete a Master's Degree in Homeland Security. I'm not sure that I have the time to devote to this goal but we'll see if I complete the application process and gain acceptance. My children continue to be the pride of my life. My son tested and earned a black belt in karate and pretty much can kick my a__ now. I'm glad he has adjusted well to life. He is a good looking boy with girls texting him often. The girls seem a lot more forward than I remember when I was that age. He is considerably different from the troubled youth that I was when I was their age.... I wonder who his father is??? I'm now in my 32nd year working with the Fire Department and well over 3/4 of my career has past by (rather quickly). I'm not sure where the time went. I am happy to say that I have reconnected with many of our friends from school. A couple from when we were in Kindergarden...What a pleasure!!! I am happy for those of you that are reading this bio... Waking up on the top side of soil is quite an accomplishment compared to the alternative. I have lost some of my closest childhood friends in the past couple of years. Kind of brings life into a different perspective. I would love to hear from those of you that have taken the time to look me up... Facebook is a great way to say hello or to drop me a note For those of you that wanted me to update this bio, consider it done. Although I left out the personal accomplishments and recognitions, I appreciate that you inquired. I will try to add some recent photos in the near future. Take care, Chuck
