Cindy's Story
Wow! It has been an amazing journey since Southeast!!! I went to KU, fully intending to graduate as a nurse. First week in school, I met the love of my life in fencing class. After 2 years at KU, Doug graduated from KU and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC. August 8, 1964we were married in Danforth Chapel at KU and off we went on "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride". We moved to Quantico, VA while Doug finished Basic School. We spent the next 10 years moving 19 times, he spent 2 tours in Viet Nam, we lived in San Clemente, CA (Camp Pendleton), Quantico, VA (USMC Training Base), and Kaneohe, HI. Both times Doug was in Viet Nam I went back to Wichita. After 10 years, Doug left the service and we settled in Kansas City for almost 12 years. Our daughter Erin was born in Honolulu, HI and our son Jason was born in Fredricksburg, VA. Doug and I both worked for the Marley Cooling Tower Company in Kansas City until he was transferred to a satellite office in Southern California. We had fallen in love with SoCal many years earlier and always wanted to ...Expand for more
return. This was our opportunity. We happily raised our children, became very involved in our church and established our life in Brea, CA for over 25 years. As it became time for retirement, we sold our home and moved to a lovely home just 15 minutes from our daughter and 3 grandchildren and still just 15 minutes from Brea. Our home is on a small lake and I enjoy the convenience and beauty of now living in Chino Hills, CA just 30 minutes east of Disneyland. In January, 2007 Doug was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. For the next 4 years I became caregiver to my Sweet Marine who went from being a strong, healthy man to a man who was completely paralyzed, could not eat nor speak and eventually could not breathe. We celebrated his homegoing on March 9, 2011. Needless to say, my life will never be the same, but I work at staying busy, making new friends and I stay involved in the ALS community, visiting with newly diagnosed patients, offering advice to other caregivers and raising money for research and the day-to-day needs of patients.
