Cindy's Story

Life Married 2001, 1 child live in Switzerland. Account is with hot mail under name seejax. I graduated from A.N. Myer in 1986 which couldn't possibly be twenty years ago! So the quick run down of my life since then follows: I went to McMaster for two years studying Biology and Psychology and then transferred to Guelph to continue in their Honours Zoology program. In the middle of those years, I took a year off and joined the Canada World Youth exchange program and spent a year on an exchange between Canada and Thailand. In Canada I lived in B.C. on the island and in Thailand I lived in a village in the central plains. After the program I returned to school and finished my degree. After graduating in 1992 I was spinning my wheels, jobless in Toronto while my then boyfriend was finishing his masters. I decided to take an evening class in Japanese just for fun with an eye to maybe returning to Asia someday. Through my Japanese teacher, I found out about the JET teaching program in Japan. I was accepted and then taught English for a year in Japan. I returned to Canada just before winter was due to arrive, and sizing up the bleak employment situation I decided to take off for Bali for four months. It was there that I decided to return to Japan. Back to Japan, I taught in conversation schools in the Osaka area for 3 years. I then saw an ad in the Japan times for a Biology teacher in a Japanese boarding school in Switzerland! That is where I ...Expand for more
am now. In 1998 I came to the mountain town and ski resort called Leysin. It is near Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. (thanks to my high school French, I have survived) I taught Biology and English to Japanese high school students for five years. The school is a very nice community and the schedule isn't bad either, our winter P.E. activity is mandatory skiing two afternoons a week (no classes) with the occasional school day cancelled for a 'ski day' when the weather and snow are very nice. I met my husband, Bill Hansen during my first year here, we started dating in my second year and got married in 2001 in a ceremony back in Canada. Bill is American, from Michigan, and teaches at the American International boarding school here in town. We love it here and have pretty much settled in. We bought a place (2 minutes from the ski lifts) and we have one daughter, Ella, 2 years old and another child on the way in August. I stopped teaching after having Ella but will return someday! We have lots of visitors, friends and family. If you remember Sue Bethune, she came to visit me two summers ago with her husband Julian. We had just re-connected after several years of losing touch with each other. So that is it, in a nutshell. I don't go back to Canada very often as my parents tend to visit me a lot here. I will be here in Switzerland for the foreseeable future! Hope to be in touch and hear about what you are doing. Cindy
