Cindy's Story

Life After high school I attended Brevard Community College, Cocoa Campus to attend their music program. I received an AA in Music Education then transfered to Florida State University where I marched with the Marching Chiefs and met my future husband. I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I lived in the Miami area after that because my future husband had gotten a band director's job and I followed, working in an office job. My plans had been to be a middle school band director but I put that on hold. We got married while in Miami and lived there a total of 5 years. He got a job here in Bradenton, Florida as the band director at Manatee High School so we moved here and I set up a private studio, teaching flute students. We have now lived here 21 years, married for 23 years. We never had children but had a cat for 21 years (Jim had her in college) and she died in the summer of 2001. I guess you can say she was like a surrogate child for us since it had always been the three of us since the day we started dating so it was very tough when she left us. After 7 years without her, we now have 2 cats, brother and sister, that we've had since they were 6 wks old. I am also the principle flutist for the Sarasota Pops Orchestra and the founder and conductor of the Gulf Coast Flute Choir. I am the Executive Director of the Florida Flute Association and their e-newsletter designer/editor. I am also an active member of the National Flute Association. te University and received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. Workplace I love the fact that I'm my own boss and I schedule my own vacations and holidays. My job is very rewarding, teaching the flute and watching some of them continue their music in their lives. I am the Executive Director of the Florida Flute Association as well as their e-newsletter designer/editor and I try to attend the National Flute Association conventions whenever I can. My job can be rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Times are different these days then they were when we were in school. So many parents want their kids to take lessons to be a "great" flutist but then the students don't practice to achieve that. Out of 25 students, you might have 2 students that really excel the way they should because the others are so involved in many other activities. So, my rewards are to watch them do well at Solo and Ensemble Festivals and watch the handful that do well in auditions for various things and then I might get one every now and then that makes the Allstate Band or Orchestra. On the otherhand, while teaching some adults, I find out that they wished they had kept up their flute skills and miss playing their instrument. So in 2001, I formed and conduct the Gulf Coast Flute Choir, made up of over 20 amateur adult flutists and we perform around the community and put on concerts throughout the year. I, myself, get performing satisfaction by being the Principle Flutist of the Sarasota Pops Orchestra, performing periodically with the Florida Flute Orchestra and I'm hired freelance around the area.
