Cindy's Story

And a million years later, here I am. Mostly, I frequent Facebook. My profile there is Cindra Mata. Today, I am married to a really great guy, Joe. (arent we all married to really great people!) We celebrated our 20 wedding anniversary this past July (I think he must be a saint to have put up with me!). Together we have a son who is 18 and a senior in high school. I have a daughter who is 21 and my other daughter who is 31 lives there in Booneville. More on that maybe later. We are Christians. My husband is a much better Christian than I am, but I am a true work in progress. A great example of God's Grace! My husband and son have an Mixed Martial Arts Outreach Ministry. My husband was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame for Christian Martial Arts Instructor of the Year, this past July in Orlando, FL. We live in Weslaco, Texas. Just a few miles from the border of Mexico. I go there, 'just because I can'. We moved to Texas in 1991, lived 3 months in Donna, Texas, then 3 years in Houston, then back in Donna, and we have lived in Weslaco, for 6 years. I officially left Mississippi in November 1985, I joined the Army. Served 4 years. Fort Dix, NJ for Basic and AIT, then I spent a year in South Korea, at Camp Casey, about 10 or 15 miles from the DMZ. Then I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Loved NC and would go back there any time! The joining of the Army is when I felt my life truly began. I grew up, or matured or whatever you want to call it, during that time. I found me. But the thing with me, when I finally found me, is that I was not that great and I had done a lot of stuff I was not necessarily proud of. But life goes on. So, 1985...no more drugs. The drinking was almost behind me. I did drink until I left Korea (honestly, if it were not for drinking, shopping and running, there would have been nothing else to do). So, when I left Korea, I l...Expand for more
eft that behind me too. 1987, a new life in North Carolina. I was single. I dated two guys, one for only a short while, and I had Nadara, my 21 year old. The other, Michael, I dated for a longer time, but just could not take it to the next step. Then one day, I met Joe, he was in my backyard, talking to Michael....Joe and I married 2 months later. I am still not sure how that happened, but it did and probably is why I am the person I am today. Remember Joe is a much better person than I am. Nadara was just 3 or 4 months old when I was involved in an electrical lightening incident at FBNC while on a field exercise. That was the start of another set of problems all by itself, but we did not realize it until recently. The death of my grandparents. That was so hard. I came back for the funerals. I was so hurt and full of anger during this time. The pain to this day is still a very alive. During this already hard time, I had to deal with another really hard situation of my past. The death of my mother my senior year of high school. My marriage to Donald Gann. So many things happening way to fast. So many not so positive things. We moved to Houston, as I said in 1991. There, I started going thru depression and was suicidal for the next six years, during which time we moved to Donna, Texas. This is also when we started attending church and became Christians. About a year ago, I began having the depression again. Sometimes I am suicidal, but I try not to linger there. My goal is to live my life and enjoy my husband, children and grandchildren. My God is an awesome God and thru Him, I know I can do this. Wow, that's it. Thats the entire short version of the story of what happened to Cindy Merrill, if you ever wanted to know. Oh yes, and remember how skinny I was, well I am not that skinny little girl any more. Oh how I wish.....lol Til another day! c
