Cindy's Story

Hi everyone! I guess it’s about time I shared what’s been going on in my life over these many years. After graduation, I accepted a position as an Offense Report Clerk with Va. Beach Police Dept, This is where I met my first husband, Warren Bailey, a police officer and also a 1967 graduate of PA. We were married on New Year’s Eve 1976. We were excited to welcome our firstborn, a beautiful daughter in 1979. Warren became ill in the early eighties. It was determined that his only option to get better would be to receive a heart transplant. While we waited for a new heart to become available, we welcomed our second child, another lovely daughter in 1983. I took a break from working to be a full-time wife and mother. I returned to the workforce in the fall of 1986 and went to work with the Chesapeake Police Department in a very similar position to the one I held with the VBPD. Warren finally received his new heart in Sept. 1989. .Sadly, he developed an infection and died on September 21st, just after his 40th birthday, leaving me with our two daughters now ages 10 and 6 years old to raise. A couple of years later, a friend introduced me to her husband’s co-worker, Sam. We hit it off and since I felt my daughters needed a father figure in their lives, Sam and I married I the spring of 1992. Unfortunately, I realized shortly after, that Sam struggled with alcoholism and I made the difficult decision to divorce him. I later learned that Sam died a few years later from his drinking. I remained single, raising my girls until 2005 when I met and married a wonderful man, Bill Barber. He was the Chief Engineer for WTVZ Channel 33. During our marriage, both of my daughters married wonderful men and blessed us with three grandchildren, two girls ages 15 and 12 and a grandson almost 4 years old. During my marriage to Bill, he dealt with many health problems and due to a serious fall where he suffered a severe fracture of his leg, he became confined to a wheelchair. At the end of April 2...Expand for more
019, Bill suffered another terrible fall trying to get into his wheelchair. It was in the wee hours of the morning and I was awakened by a loud crash and Bill calling for me to dial 911. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and he became unconscious by the time I arrived at the ER. Later, I learned that he was suffering from several infections, including pneumonia. He He had been placed on a respirator to help with his breathing. One week later, he spiked a fever of 108 degrees and medical staff could not get the fever to drop, nor had they been able to wean him off the respirator. They informed me that if he survived that crisis he would have brain damage and require care in a long term facility. A brief time after in the wee hours of May 4, 2019 Bill passed away peacefully with my oldest daughter and myself at his bedside. We would have celebrated our fifteenth anniversary this past July 22. I retired from the Chesapeake PD in 2011 after 30 years of service. I am currently living with my oldest daughter and her family. She is a Nurse Manager with Sentara and is currently working on her MSN degree and should graduate in December. Bill and I had been living in North Carolina. Upon his death, my daughter didn’t want me to live alone down there and invited me to live with her family. My youngest daughter lives in Toledo, Ohio with her family. As for me, I enjoy traveling, especially Caribbean cruises, but with COVID-19 attacking our world, I don’t know when I will cruise again. After reading this, I realize that my life has pretty much been spent taking care of my loved ones. a “nurturer” you could say. I don’t mean to sound like a “Debbie Downer”. Perhaps, I will be able to add some more pleasant experiences in the future. Looking back at my high school years, I was a very quiet and shy person with only a few close friends. I have evolved into a much more talkative and outgoing person. If anyone remembers me. I would love to hear from you! Stay safe everyone! cb
