Cindy's Story

Class of '76...40 years...my how time flies! There are a few of you who might remember me from Craigmont High School in Memphis, TN, and even more of you that might remember me from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA. My story sort of combines the two... I came to St. Simons the middle of my 6th grade year, but I had to leave the summer of '75, which was the summer before our senior year at GA. My dad was in the Navy, and since they closed the base, he had a choice of Washington or Memphis, TN. Obviously, Memphis was where I landed. I had been so excited to graduate with the people that I went to school with since the 6th grade, but it didn't happen. I was EXTREMELY angry with my parents for moving us right before my senior year, and told them how unfair it was. But, it did me no good, because we moved anyway. When I got to Memphis, I attended Craigmont high school. It was a TOTALLY different environment than GA, and I experienced a little bit of culture shock in the beginning. Moving from a 'small town' to the 'big city' will do that to you! And, Since I was only there for one year, it was very hard to feel like a part of the school. Now, don't get me wrong, I did make some good friends, and had some really good times and it's not that it was bad, just different than what I was used to. But, I survived, and life went on! I married Jeff Cox on April 15th, 1978. It's hard to believe we've been married for 38 years. ( I was 19 and he was 20!) We have a daughter, Kimberly (36) and a son, Tony (32). Kimberly has 3 children - Hunter (17) (I was a grandmother at 40!), Henry (3 1/2) and Harrison (2). Being a grandparent is the best thing on earth! You get to love the grandkids, spoil them, then give them back to the parents!! And since we are empty nesters now, we decided to rescue 2 dogs. One is a Siberian Husky and the other is a Husky mix. They are the coolest dogs ever! After attending Memphis State University for about a year, and having no idea what career path I wanted to follow, I decided to drop out & start working full time. I started out as a secretary to the Controller for Memphis Trust Company (now Regions Bank). While working there, I was able to take 2 accounting courses, and was able to get lots of hands on experience, all of which started my career in Accounting. Turns out I was pretty good at it, so I found my niche and moved right along. While every job I've had has been in accounting, I have had a very diverse group of employers over the years. Aside from the bank, I have worked for a children & youth psychiatric hospital, an automotive aftermarket engine parts company (Clevite Engine Parts), a school magazine fundraising company, and now I'm in the Medical field. I am the Accounting Manager at MECA (Memphis Eye & Cataract Associates). I have been here for 9 years now, and am hoping that I retire from here. It's a wonderful place to work! Whe...Expand for more
n Jeff & I got married, he was framing houses. From there, he went to work for Industrial & Mechanical Contractors of Memphis Inc. as a maintenance mechanic. After leaving there, he went to Protein Technologies, which, after several owners/name changes, is now DuPont Nutrition & Health. He has been with them for 20+ years and his current position is Maintenance Superintendent. He is over all of the supervisors, and of course, the guys under the supervisors. Somewhere along the line, I convinced Jeff to come with me to St. Simons, and it only took one visit for him to fall in love with the Island. And since I still have ties to the Island, we've been back to visit almost every year for many years now. My brother & Sister-in-Law own a quilt shop on the Island (Stepping Stone Quilts, over by the airport) so I come to visit him, along with my long time friend, Evie Wood (Walker), her sister Laura (Cammon), and their parents, Royce & Bootie Wood. I'll have to say, it's really hard to go home after being on 'island time'! I'll be visiting again this year, and plan to attend GA's 40th reunion! Even though I didn't get to spend my senior year at GA, I'm still a class of '76er. Craigmont just had their 40th reunion, and it got me to thinking and wondering if GA would have one too. So, I googled Glynn Academy 40th reunion & low & behold you are! I contacted Jennifer to see if y'all would have me, & she said sure! I'm very excited to see everyone (& hope that you remember me...Vagtborg isn't a name that many people forget, so maybe that will help, lol). Just look me up in the 1975 year book, when we were juniors, and you'll find me at the tail end of our class. And, if it makes you feel any better, I had to go back & look in mine to do a 'refresher' course. I was so surprised to see how many people I knew & were friends with. I'm pretty good with faces, but not so much with names...especially after 40 years! While I was looking through my yearbook last night, I read each & every one of the comments y'all made when you signed my yearbook, and I need to take a minute tell y'all THANK YOU for having such sweet things to say about me. It really warmed my heart and I guess I never realized how many people's lives I touched in some way over our years at GA. It hasn't been all bad in Memphis...had I not moved here, I wouldn't have met my husband or had the wonderful kids & grandkids that we do, but I can tell you that Memphis has never been my true 'home'. St. Simons is my true home, and always will be. So, I'm really excited to not only be going 'home' in September, but also being able to reconnect with my friends! All & all, I have lived a truly blessed life, and am thankful for all that God has done in my life. He truly is amazing! Well, that's my story (& I'm sticking to it!). I'd love to hear from y'all, so please send me a note. God Bless! Cindy Romans 8:38-39
