Claire's Story
Life
We live outside Annapolis, Maryland with our two boys, Andrew, 11, and Kelley, 8. I run the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce in Odenton, by Fort Meade, where we are expecting 22,000 new military/civilian contractor jobs by 2011. It's a high growth area! My husband Dave works for the Air Force Surgeon General as the Chief of Medical Operations. In our spare time, we are passionate followers of University of Virginia football, rarely missing a home football game, and I am President of the UVaClub of Annapolis. We also sponsor three Midshipmen from the Naval Academy. Prior to moving to Maryland we lived in Europe for 6 years, and still miss the travel, but don't find many opportunities to get away these days.
College
Our years at Virginia are still one of the most special links my husband Dave and I share - along with our love of living and traveling in Europe! We enjoy our frequent trips back to Charlottesville, and our increasing connection to the University through my efforts with the UVaClub of Annapolis.
Workplace

en my husband was transferred to San Antonio, Texas, I worked for just under a year for a start-up health care reform organization, then took a job as Executive Director of Associated Builders and Contractors - South Texas Chapter. I was particularly proud of my work there expanding apprenticeship and school-to-work programs in the construction industry. When I left to have my first child, I became a consultant running Associated Builders and Contractors of Texas part-time from my kitchen. In 1997 we moved to Germany, and I founded a breastfeeding peer counseling support program, started a preschool co-op, and facilitated "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" at the military hospital there, all as a volunteer. While we were in Altus, Oklahoma, I focused on Squadron Commander's wife duties, but when we moved to Maryland I tried my hand at the private sector, working for a small Navy defense contractor called AVW Technologies as their business development consultant for 6 months before deciding it wasn't my passion. I am now back to running a Chamber of Commerce - and wondering why I ever stopped, I love it so much - in West Anne Arundel County, Maryland, near Annapolis.
