Claudette's Story

After high school I... Went to Western for my freshman year, then to Michigan State for my sophomore year, and finally graduated from Wayne State in occupational therapy. I planned on going on to medical school, but then I found out that I really enjoyed OT, and never looked back. One thing I did pick up at Michigan State... my husband Phil. We were married in 1975, and moved to Lansing where he finished school in civil engineering. He worked for the Highway Department for 27 years, and then took an early retirement at age 50. After that he worked for an engineering consulting firm half of the time and volunteered in several faith-based community organizations the rest of the time... oh yes, and he played golf. Lots of golf. Our three daughters are all doing well. Megan (27), a new attorney in the Chicago area, got married last summer. Katie (25) worked in Boston for two years doing video production and editing, and now is in Tampa, Florida. Allie (20) is a junior at MSU, double majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics (James Madison College) and Theater. We moved to Portage 16+ years ago, and we really enjoy it in southwest Michigan. I work for the Disability Management program, specializing in vocational ergonomi...Expand for more
cs and technology accommodations around the state. I have been involved for three decades with the Michigan OT Association as well as the American OT Association, and I currently represent Michigan in the AOTA representative assembly. Three years ago I took the plunge and ran for Portage City Council, and I won! I have truly enjoyed working in this capacity. I got involved in my community by heading up a citizen-initiated zoning referendum a little more than five years ago. The referendum was to repeal a change in zoning that would allow building a Wal-Mart in a wooded area adjacent to the Portage Creek. It ended up going to a special election, we lost and the zoning change allowed for the store to be built. However, the citizens had a great deal of impact on the design and placement of the store, and it is much better now than the original design. In September, 2006 Phil had a heart attack and died. This is been so difficult on our family, but I've been blessed by many supportive friends. Roberta (Kahle), Katie (Willett) and I just got together to go to the Holland Tulip Festival... we don't get together often enough, but when we do it is like no time has passed at all. So, that catches you up on my life... so far.
