Clem's Story

Life After I graduated from Greeley Central in 1967, I moved to a little town in Southern Colo. named La Veta, just west of Walsenburg. I moved there with my girlfriend at the time; it was her hometown and her name was Ersie. I doubt that anybody in my class would know her, but anyway, we got married a few weeks later and a few months later she was pregnant with my first son, George (born July, 1968. He graduated from Greeley West in 1983. It was very difficult making a living in the mountains, so we moved to Walsenburg, then Pueblo, where I worked at the CF & I steel mill for a few years. Unfortunately, we divorced after a few years of marriage and I moved back to good ol' Greelely. That was back in the 1970's and everything was "groovy". I enrolled at Aims College, but not to get educated, just for the college party scene, but then I found that I actually enjoyed learning. I graduated and got a scholarship for the next 2 years, so I went to a small Catholic college in Madison, Wis. I graduated with a BA in Business and moved back to Greelely. I remarried in 1979 and had another son, Johnny, in 1983. After a few temp jobs, I got hired with the Colo. Dept of Labor and worked there for 20 years. Well darned if history didn't repeat itself! I got divorced again in 1999 only this time it was anything but "groovy". In 1999, I was diagnosed with Diabetis and high blood pressure, I'm about 50 pounds overweight, (which I'm desperately trying to lose) my hair is very thin on top, I'm broke because after I retired, I took all my retirement in one lump sum and we paid off all our bills, (how did I know ...Expand for more
I was just a few years from another divorce?) , and I don't have a steady job now. My new life really SUCKS, but somehow I manage to make it one day at a time. I now live in Ft. Collins, at the Northern Hotel, but it's not really a hotel anymore, its low income housing for Senior Citizens, you can be a senior citizen at 55 there. I have a car, but little gas money, too old for any good company to hire, too young to retire. But enough about my loser life. The only good thing about me is that I have turned my life over to the Lord and I am a "born again Christian". With all my problems, I still find myself happy and appreciative for the things I do have, such as a place to live, food to eat, Grandchildren (4 of them, ages: boys--8,6,4,and and little girl 2), there are other blessings in my life, but I'm running out of space. I wish with all my heart that I could attend the 40th class reunion because it seems like only a few days ago that we were running through the halls of Greeley Central and riding around in our cars. The last time I went to a class reunion was 20 years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps somehow God will provide a way for me to have a couple of hundred dollars extra so that I can see all of you again, though I doubt whether any of you would care to see a failure like me again. At least I'm still alive, which is more than I can say for some of our classmates who didn't even live to make it to our first reunion. Please say "Hello" to me if we ever meet on the street. I love to talk about old times and who knows, we may even find out that we have a lot of things in common!
