Clyde's Story

My Cancer has returned. This is definitely not what I wanted but I know that GOD doesn't make mistakes. I'm OK just getting ready for this next fight. Please pray for my wife, children, step-children, family, and friends. We have beat this twice and we will do it again. The 1st time it was colon cancer which resulted in surgery and 6 months of chemo. The 2nd time it was liver which resulted in surgery and 3 months chemo. This time, it is on my lungs; therefore, surgery is not an option. I will undergo chemo after my Dr. finishes consulting with some other doctors. We are not sure when the chemo will begin and we are not sure what drugs I will receive this time. With prayer and love, we will win this battle. I will keep you posted. Clyde E. "Gene" Currie Briefly, my story is: I am 46 years old. In July 2006, I was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, the very disease that my father died from at age 62 on July 4, 1988. Needless-to-say, I was devastated; however, determined to fight with all that I got. I underwent successful surgery in July 2006. I then underwent 12 cycles of chemotherapy (6 months). During my chemo treatment, I worked almost everyday with the exception of about three days. I was determined not to let this thing defeat me. Also, I knew that if I kept a positive outlook an displayed a positive demeanor, it would make things easier for my family, friends, co-workers, and supporters. Guess what, it worked. After my chemo ended, I had to maintain regular checkups with my doctor. All was well until a few of months ago when something started showing up on my liver. Well, as fate would have it, it turned out to be a return visit from "Mr. Cancer." I underwent a second surgery on April 16th 2008. Now, I am again receiving chemo. I returned to work on May 28th. I am just taking it 1 day at a time. Today...Expand for more
is a good day. I am feeling well. Actually, everyday is a good day. This is my week for Chemo so I am going to work until noon Wed. I get my two hour infusion starting at 1:00 PM Wed. Then, I will get a pump that I wear home and it will give me an additional 46 hours of Chemo. I return to the UT Cancer Institute on Fri. to have my pump removed. Although I can work on Thurs. and Fri., I'm not going to push myself to hard. When I got my Chemo two years ago, I worked thru the entire process (12 cycles/6 months); however, this time, the Chemo seems to me even more aggressive and it is causing me to feel sicker and weaker; therefore, I'm taking a break from work during my treatment weeks (6 cycles, actually 5 more to go, with the last cycle beginning July 30th). I know you didn't ask for all of that just thought I'd bring you up to speed.....LOL. I feel so Blessed and I really appreciate the prayers, love and support that I have received. I am living proof that prayer, love, and support works. By the Grace of GOD, we have defeated Cancer once and we are in the process of doing it again (there are currently no signs of the disease showing anywhere in my body - the Chemo is a precaution). I also went thru a period of heavy drinking; however, by the grace of GOD, that has been defeated as well. The only thing that I drink now is an occassional glass of white wine, preferrably light and sweet. Life has never been so good. My only wish now, besides at least 30 more years of life, is that Congress will appropriate more funds for Cancer Research. In the United States, we are losing far too many great Oncology professionals to other countries and other career due to lack of funding. I hope that my experience will lift up others as well as encourage them and offer them hope. Respectfully submitted, Clyde E. "Gene" Currie
