Clyde Polk:

CLASS OF 1975
Dallas, TX

Clyde's Story

I am a 1975 graduate of Spruce High School. I transferred to Spruce in 1973 after moving to the district in 1973. Spruce High School started busing students from South Dallas to Spruce High that year. It was not a good time for Spruce High School. I remember the problems that existed and all the chaos. My parents had moved from Oak Cliff to Pleasant Grove by Comstock Junior High. I had met some friends from the area and that was it. I was kind of quiet and to myself but loved playing sports and considered myself an average student that believed in getting his school work done. I really did not know what to what to expect in a new school and new people. I played sports and that made it better. I was coming from a Junior Varsity Team at Wilmer Hutchins that was undefeated my freshman and sophomore years. I was used to winning, I did tryout for the Apaches Football Team. The position that I tried out for was Defensive Cornerback and Safety. The position that I had played from little league to sophomore at Wilmer Hutchins and I considered myself a good athlete but not Big headed. However, there was someone in that position that had played previous years so I tried out for the position that had interested me since my sophomore year - defensive end and linebacker, I did make the Team and played for the next two years. I remember in 1974, Spruce played against Carter High School for City Championship and we lost. I did not get offered a scholarship after Senior year but believed that I could play at the next level (College) Earnest Shields was playing at Tyler Junior College, Mark Washington was playing at Arkansas. Earnest told me to come to Tyler Junior College and tryout for the team and I did. I thank God for encouraging friends. I tried out for a Football Scholarship at Tyler Junior College where Earnest Shields was currently playing (Grad 1974). I did well and did make a good impression on the Defensive Coach and Head Coach. I was told to come back in August of 1976 and compete for one of the Defensive End position. I returned to Dallas, TX and worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company located on Lemmon Ave, Dallas, TX. I worked in Shipping and Receiving= driving the Forklift and loading trucks. I worked out and kept myself in shape awaiting my time to compete for a Football scholarship at Tyler Junior College I did return to Tyler Junior College in August 1976 and I did earn a Scholarship to play Football for the next 2 years. I do appreciate the encouragement of Former Apache (Earnest Shields) and other players there that I knew from Wilmer Hutchins, They encourage me to believe in myself and God-given abilities to compete at a high level. I received All Conference Honors both years while playing at Tyler Junior College. I was offered another Football Scholarships to continue playing the next two years by University of Tulsa, Stephen F. Austin University, Southwest Texas University and San Angelo State University. I chose Stephen F. Austin University. I played there for the next two years as an Outside Linebacker. I received Ail Conference Honors the...Expand for more
ir also. God truly did bless me and I was appreciative of it. I did have the unforgettable pleasure to play against a fellow Spruce Apache that is not with us anymore- (Eric Johnson). He played at Spruce High during 1974 and 1975 years as a running back and a defensive back. I played against Eric Johnson while he was attending the East Texas College now called A M at Commerce. There were several other classmates from the class of 1975 that was attending the same school also. I did win the game against Eric Johnson and I had two successful years at SFA. I received Honorable mention all-Conference and Second Team All-Conference while at SFA. I Pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in fall 1980. I did have two tryouts with Professional Football Teams - San Diego Chargers and New York Jets. I didn't get picked up I went back to Stephen F, Austin and finished up my B.S Degree in General Business and Education in August 1982. I decided I wanted to see some of the whole so; I joined the US Army in September of 1982. I had basic training at Fort Linwood (Springfield. Missouri). I departed there in December of 1982. I went to Fort Gordon (Augusta Georgia) for School of Telecommunication/Digital Equipment. I was there until April of 1983, after receiving my Certificate in Telecommunication. I was assigned my first Duty station in Mannheim, Germany. I was there for three years, I traveled all over Europe. I was assigned to Duty at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas in 1986. I was at Fort Hood until 1988. I was selected to attend advance school back at Fort Gordon, Georgia for two months and then back to Germany. I was assigned to Frankfurt, Germany after school was over in July 1988. I was assigned to a signal unit in Frankfurt, Germany. In the summer of 1990, I was asked to take a team of 8 people to Desert Storm, Saudi Arabia. I was stationed about 20 miles from the Persian Gulf in Kuwait. I was there for 6 months or until the war was over. I returned back to my unit in Frankfurt, Germany for another two years. I was then assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina. I was there until September of 1993, when I decided to get out after 10 years and 11 months. I came back to Dallas, Texas. I went to Central Office Installation trying to get my career going in IT. The first job, I received was at the City of Houston, IT Department in 1995. . Worked there for over a year and I decided to go back to Dallas and work. I worked for CompuCom for almost a year (1996). I did get a job for Southwestern Bell in Richardson, TX. I was there for about 6 months and I was hired by Head Start of Greater Dallas in (1997) for almost a year. I was hired by TXU in 1998 and worked there for four years (2002). I was then hired by Children Medical Center and worked there from March 2002 to February 2010. In September of 2010, I was hired by FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) located Downtown Dallas. I am currently working for the FDIC located Downtown Dallas. This is what I have been up to in the last so many years. I would like to see some old classmates..... Take and God Bless You....
