Colin's Story
I received my Ph.D. in mathematics in 1983, from the University of Wisconsin. I teach at Williams College, having first taught two years at Oregon State University, and having spent sabbaticals at UC-Santa Barbara, UC-Davis and UC-Berkeley. I have two children, Alexa, age 29, now in Seattle, and Colton, age 24, now in southern CA. My wife passed away almost 20 years ago, so I raised them on my own.
I have written or co-written eleven books, 75 research articles and 130 expository articles. The research has been supported by the National Science Foundation.
The books vary all over the map, from traditional textbooks to "Riot at the Calc Exam", which is a collection of humorous stories, all with a mathematical bent and "Zombies & Calculus", a novel about how a ...Expand for more
math professor uses calculus to survive the zombie apocalypse. One is a comic book with attached toy for the exercises called "Why Knot?", which explains the mathematical theory of knots (one of my main research areas). If you have kids (or grandkids) doing calculus, two are "How to Ace Calculus" and "How to Ace the Rest of Calculus", humorous supplements to calculus.
I love teaching, and have received various awards, including the Mathematical Association of America Haimo Award and the Robert Foster Cherry Teaching Award. I like to think about new ways to present mathematics, to make it less intimidating. I also put on humorous math theater at the national math meetings each winter, casting colleagues and students in the various roles.
All in all, life is good.
