Colleen's Story

Life I am currently living north of Dallas, Texas. I had been teaching for eleven to grades 6th,7th, and 8th graders in the subject of science at a small 1A school. I have moved to a 3A school and have taught 5th and 6th grades science for two years. Finally, I have been at a 2a rural school where I teach 7th and 8th grade science. This is my 18th year of teaching. This year I did so well the staff voted me teacher of the year. I know this seems odd since I had no interest whatever in science when I was younger. I finally figured out that my love of history, especially geological time and dinosaurs could be worth something in the teaching field. My teaching certification is in earth science. I have acquired working knowledege of physics, biology, and chemistry now. I have finished my masters of art in teaching with speciality in teaching science as of May 2007. Yippee! This has been a long term goal of mine. I am now working on fine tuning my presentations of workshops to other teachers. Yes, shy colleen can get in front of people and talk and talk. My students say I have the wackiest presentation style and especially like my storytelling way of teaching science. I also dress in costumes for the middle school and district pep rally's to jazz up the audience. If I thought roller skating down the hallways would motivate the kids I would do it. I incorporate all those years of history classes into my lectures and activities. I do have a degree in sociology also. That helps when working with hormone induced preteenagers. I have a husband who works as a home inspector/webdesigner/home repair/ tree service.. He is kind of jack of all trades. Been married 24 years. My two boys are eighteen and thirteen years old. The older one, Carlton has graduated early from high school and is almost finished with his two year degree in pre engineering.. He can write funny lyrics to current pop songs like Weird Al does very quickly. James the younger one is more outdoors type. He adores boys scouts and camping. He wants to be a power lifter and at this time wants to be a chef. We sold our 10 acreas of land and bought an older 1920's craftsmen house in a nearby town to renovate. ds and during the summers. I enjoy finding little treasures that people have left behind in the house over the years. We have gutted the house and are renovating it up to modern times, but hoping to keep the home in period. I am a collector of antique hats and whatever other antiques catch my eye. I roller skate for excercise and dancing aerobics. We also sail, canoe, camp whenever we can. Both my husband and I are boy and cub scout leaders, but lately I have backed out of the boy scout stuff as its not so cool to have mom around. We travel whenever we can and with our flexible schedule this is possible. The boys have become so good at construction they have built their own 8X10 clubhouse with an upstairs loft. People are often amazed when the youngest starts explaining how to wire a outlet and a circuit breaker. Update new 2021- Well, I am now teaching high school science: chemistry, physics and psychology /sociology. Getting ready for retirement and moving near Canon City, Colorado with a 10 acreas of beautiful mountain top view. Husband and I are still together going on 33 years. The eldest is doing great as an construction engineer and the youngest got through culinary training so I eat some very delicious meals from time to time. I still roller skate and actually won some competitions and provide some lessons on Saturdays. The Covid-19 has put a strain on the schools and students. Apathy is rampant yet, there are some great moments. Students don't care to work for the American dream anymore and just waiting for handouts and somebody is going to magically pass them and give them money to live on forever. There will always be the the ones still striving forward but every year it is getting less and less. It is time to move out of the way and let the next generation build their own future. Watching family members/friends get sick/die during this pandemic has made me aware that life is fragile and you need to embrace the time you have left so its time to retire and take care of myself. Still hoping that in all my years of teaching science that one will make it to Mars and beyond and I hope to see this accomplishment before I go.
