Connie's Story

Life Just celebrated 35th wedding anniversary. Married to the same guy, Jerry Allen. We got stationed here with the Army in 1983 and have been in Lawton, OK. ever since. Guess it's home now. We have 3 sons, 2 daughters by marriage and 5 grankids. Jerry is a OTR trucker and so either are or were all 3 sons. Our oldest, Michael, was killed in a trucking accident in June of '96. He was 27 at the time. Our youngest 2 sons are twins and will be 30 this year. One twin, Daniel, is also a OTR trucker. David was but came to his senses and is head painter at a paint and body shop here in town now. Our oldest granson just turned 9 in April, his sister was 6 the same day. Their baby brother only lived 7 hours, we lost him 4 1/2 years ago. Their oldest cousin was 8 the day after DJ and Tori's birthday...no excuse for Granma to forget! Her sister is 4. I am a SAHW/M/G, not always in that order. Would love to hear from anyone. I spend a lot of time on the computer. And as much time with my grankids as I possibly can!!!!! Sept. 28, 2010, Guess it's time to catch up, it's been awhile. I still live in Lawton, guess I always will. We lost our second son, Daniel, in a trucking accident also. He's been gone 4 1/2 years now. Then Jan. 2009, Jerry lost his 6 1/2 year battle with cancer. My last son, David, and his family live here with me now. I really did not like being alone after Jerry died. I am still working at K-Mart as a cashier. Have been there almost 6 years. I still like my job. My grankids are growing up. Daniel's girls are 16 and 12 and David's kids are 17 and 14. I was out in Wasco for my dad's funeral 3 years ago. Don't make many trips out to Ca. I spend my off time reading or on the computer or watching tv. I like mysteries and detective stories and have a whole stack that have been read and another stack waiting to be read. Don't do much going...just to work, doctors, grocery store and on post to the commissary and to get my meds. I'm pretty much a homebody and like it. So much for catching up. If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to my family, then spend the rest on my kids , grankids and save the rest. PATIENCE If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my bathroom and add on a bigger room for my kids bedroom. My dream home would be out in the country. Pets, Dogs, Zues, Baxter. Snakes, Charlie, Maggie, Cali and Sebastin. Young and Restless and All My Children. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Gary I miss him, because he's a sweetheart. I eat. Go to my room. Read a book about a grisley murder. I always wanted to be a tall, leggy blond when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a stupid idea. As it turns out, they were right..................................................................................................................................................... Well it's 2016 now. Haven't updated this in awhile so guess it's time. In 2013 I was with my granddaughter. We were on our way to Dr. for her 1st sonogram of my 1st Great Grand Baby. We had had a cold spell a...Expand for more
nd I stepped in what I thought was a puddle of water...turns out it was black ice. I went down and was falling face first so some how, managed to twist my body so I landed on my back...should have just fell on my face, as it turned out. I pulled something in my back...I thought. Did not go to the Dr. Kept working at Kmart. On my feet all the time at work. Back started getting worse instead of better so finely made myself go to the Dr. He said it was arthritis and gave me meds for that. I went back and forth with him giving me different meds and none of them working. Finely in April of 2014, I had to quit work be I couldn't stand up straight and was having to use a walker to walk. I told him to send me to a specialist, he's just a GP, so he did. Had to have MRI, CAT Scan and I don't remember what all before I saw him. First thing he says when he walks in room is 'how are you able to walk?' I didn't quite know how to answer that so he says 'you have a broken back'. I thought if you broke your back you were paralyzed and totally unable to walk. I found out that if you do not sever the spinal cord you are able to walk. Luckily, that is what I did. I had destroyed the lower 5 vertebrae, there are only 5 in that particular bunch. I had the 1st surgery the last of June and the middle I had the 2nd one. I felt 100% better, until October. Started having same symptoms and while I was sitting watching TV with my grandson one night, I couldn't stand up. My grandson took me to the emergency room. They ran some tests...I have no idea what, as I was completely out of it. Woke up 65 miles away in OU Medical Center up by Okie City. I didn't know what was going on. They were giving me Morphine IV and apparently I go crazy on it, thought they were trying to kill me and was not a good patient. 9 days later they transferred me back to Lawton to a nursing home/rehab center. I was there for almost 4 months. By the time they figured out it was the pain meds causing the problem and got it stopped I was unable to stand or walk. Was there over the holidays and finally got out the middle of Feb. 2015. Had therapist coming to the house 2 times a week and was doing real good. Could walk some without my walker so was feeling pretty saucy. First part of April was in an auto accident and broke my wrist..again did not go to the Dr. thought it was just jammed(I'm my own worse enemy). The end of April I fell walking to the car...I had even gotten to where I could drive myself. Broke my ankle, so back to hospital, back to surgery, back to nursing home/rehab center. Got my old room back and was just like going home...NOT! 2 months of therapy, a cast for a broken wrist...I had broken it in the car crash and I was finally allowed to come home. I do therapy and have Dr. visits out the butt and am VERY leery of walking without my walker. But I am gonna get there one day. So much for my tale of woe. As of today, haven't fallen...no broken bones...back will never be completely heeled because of the damage I did. I have to use a pain patch but am feeling good.
