Connie's Story

My profile photo is a picture of my husband, my youngest son and me. Since June, 2009, our son has been a cadet at West Point. Acceptance Day was August 15th, 2009. That is the time when new cadets transition to cadets and are then officially recognized as Plebes. He is currently starting his final year (Firstie year) at the USMA and still has a love/hate relationship for the school. Somedays he loves it and other days he manages. The school is as challenging as its reputation purports it to be. He survived "Beast", West Point's cadet basic training where cadets learn everything from land navigation to rappelling to shooting to etiquette. We just attended Ring Weekend at West Point, the time when all Firsties get their rings. Their rings are symbols of accomplishment and pride. In May, he will graduate and upon graduation will commission as a 2nd LT. I have two beautiful grandchildren: a 6-year old granddaughter, Kaitlyn (Katie), and a 2-year old grandson, Alexander. He is now just as spoiled as Katie. They are the loves of my life. These are my oldest son's children. He and my daughter-in-law, Valorie, are great parents. My husband, Carl, is a very good and patient person. He says he has to be patient to put up with me. But, honestly, I think it's the other way around. We complement each other well, and he is very supportive of my career and every and any challenge I throw his way. The years have flown by. I never thought they would go by so fast. cer survivor and I thank God everyday for all the blessings He has given me. I have been working for the federal government for 38 years this past June and loving every minute. I am now an Area Director and have oversight for 18 federal government offices in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and will soon acquire my 19th office. When we are in school, we think everything that happens when we are in those impressionable years is so critical. If we had only known then that looks and popularity do not define who we are. After all, as we have all learned by now, beauty is just skin deep. We don't keep our looks. What does stay with us is our character, our integrity, our values. What makes us who we are is who we are inside and how we treat others regardless of their status in life. Unfortunately, we are too naive at that age to know the difference. I am thankful for the friends back then who accepted me for who I was and not for what I had; or better yet, for what I didn't have. And, I am also thankful for those individuals who provided the guidance and understanding to help me grow and develop into who I am today. This Martin Luther King saying is one of my favorite sayings, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy." It is those times of challenge and controversy that have given me the strength and courage to appreciate life fully. Please feel free to drop me a line.
