Her schools include High Point Central High School, Wingate University (Education), High Point University (Sociology and Psychology), Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, Salem College. She worked at Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools teaching first elementary education, then high school history, and finally middle school teaching English and social studies.
