Connie's Story

UPDATE: I DID IT!!!! I retired the end of Nov 2011 with 37 years from Federal Civil Service. Am buying a home in Glendale AZ. Mom still living with me and my younger brother Robert lives near. Am totally enjoying retirement, but am thinking of looking for a part time job. I have found that it did not take long to catch up on 37 years of missed sleep. And, staying up until 2:00 am is for the birds. I keep forgetting I'm not as young as I once was. Life Have recently marked my 29th year of working for the Federal Government, and found out that they are not going to let me retire in 2005 - they want to keep me around until 2012. I think I can handle it! Am still looking forward to retirement and anticipating working for my younger brother Robert in his private security business full time. School Wow- we just passed our 30th year reunion. I can remember back in high school, thinking how I couldn't wait to get out of school. I can't recall off the top of my head how many different schools I attended before arriving in LaGrande. It was so nice to be at one school for 3 whole years! Not having to meet new people and break in new instructors - that was always so difficult for me being an ambivert. One of our classmates even called me a snob to my face, and I'm sure others of you may have agreed. Sorry - I just was not the outgoing type, more quiet and shy. But it was nice to have "SMaGe" (Mr Fulton) at school to make me feel more comfortable - him having been military and all. It was grand living in a small town despite it not being a military town where I felt more comfortable - LaGrande was basically the first town where I was not with other military "Brats" and I felt out of place in a strange town. I enjoyed my time with the Service Club, and loved Mrs Jambura -she was a lovely lady. I also enjoyed my business classes and Mrs Otten was a dream. Ah-h then there was Mr Johnson for History -thank you for inviting my Father to speak on the Viet Nam War -I'm sure it was quite an education for you non-military folks, and it caused a mini-war between myself and Rick Rhoton. Rick- I still contend that my Father was not a baby killer. Hope you've changed your attitude on that one! Well, I thank you LaGrande for having me for 3 years wonderful years. THE WAR WITH RICK HAS BEEN RESOLVED AFTER ALL THIS TIME.!! Workplace This is a tough one. I started out right out of high school and applied for a Federal job. While waiting, I worked as a jewelry clerk at Monte Mart and an Admin Assistant in an OB/GYN Office. I started Civil Service working on the Rifle Ranges of all things on the beach as a radar and switchboard operator in 1974. In 1976 I was RIF'd but was re-hired as a temp in the Finance and Accounting Office. I LOVED IT! From there I got re-hired permanently into the medical field, first as a fill in in Radiology and then moving into Family Practice. I spent more years than I'd like to recall in Family Practice, then took time off and went to live...Expand for more
in Stuttgart West Germany with my parents. I thought I was supposed to be on vacation! But with a lot of perserverance and cursing at the Heidelberg Civilian Personnel Office, I was hired by Harry Diamond Laboratories out of Adelphia, Maryland as a Secretary. Met some wonderful folks. After a year it was time to give up my vacation and return to the real world - it took a while, but I was re-hired in my old job at the Family Practice Clinic and stayed there for about 10 years before I had finally had enough BS from Dr Hoffer and found myself a nice new home in Preventive Medicine where I wasn't accused of wrong doing when someone else was the doer! I sat back and watched Dr Hoffer and then his successor ruin the Family Practice Residency Program that we had at Fort Ord. They ran it into the ground and we lost our credentialing with UC San Francisco. I had an enjoyable 3 years in Preventive Medicine learning a whole new area of medicine, and lost a wonderful, sensitive co-worker in JoAnn Kent who took her own beautiful life in 1989. It 1990, I did a lateral transfer to the Flight Surgeon - Wow - I finally made it. The job of my dreams. To be with my "buddies" throughtout the day. My dream job ended suddenly when Uncle Sam made the unfortunate decision to close Fort Ord and deactivate the 7th ID. We closed our office on 26 July 1993 and I moved over to the Presidio of Monterey Health Clinic as a "detailed" employee for 90 days. At the end of 90 days I was to be ableto "apply" to keep my own job. Well, before that happened, I was informed that I was being replaced by someone who did not out-ranked me, someone who was not even career status. So I sat in an empty office in the Outpatient Clinic/ER and helped the last remaining Flight Surgeon, Dr David Ramos when he needed admin assistance on flight physcials. In October 1993, I visited Edwards AFB and submitted an application and was hired in their Flight Surgeon's Office to begin work on 27 Dec 1993. This was the biggest mistake I ever made in my life. I have regretted this move every day of the almost 10 years that I have been here, and I've been working hard to try to find a job anywhere in Northern California, as long as it is far, far away from the Air Force and their strange and sometimes seemingly illegal and fraudulent actions. I want to distance myself from the doings in this place as soon as possible. My final job beginning 28 Dec 2004 was with the Veterans Administration working in a Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Monterey CA - located on the former Fort Ord Army installation. It was wonderful being back and seeing former friends and former co-workers. I just love listening to our older Veterans tell their stories and wish that we can get our younger Veterans to open up. But, internal strife and a Supervisor with "favorites" was causing me so much stress that it began affecting my health. Medical retirements take too long, so I just said "Hasta la BYE-BYE" and took the money and ran.
