Constance's Story
Hi ya'll!
Connie Houck, McNabb, Pompano Jr (when it was pretty and old Florida style and had a cool big tree in the courtyard) and Pompano Sr. High class of '72.
After that, I was a mime, yellow page sales rep., bookseller and special event planner at the Lauderdale Borders Bookstore, lucked into a job and ended up going to China for months at a time designing stuff you would buy at Walgreens and CVS. Also, you probably saw my cartoons in alternative weeklies but didn't know they were me.
Wore out two husbands, didn't have kids but have cherished "fake" kids of good friends I sprinkle the old diamonds and such a crazy great aunt left me when she went to that dance hall in the sky. Very left, served as President of the local NOW chapter of Brevard County, we worked heavily with domestic violence shelters and women's heath. And I am pro-choice, and what the hell is the U.S. doing playing war in the middle east. Don't we remember Viet Nam?
Moved to Melbourne, Florida and one by one took care of my family as they moved on to their next spiritual adventure. I know many of you are doing the same, my heart goes out to you and your loved ones. It is an honor and a nightmare to be the "Last Houck". They are all west of Dixie (the horror, we had always been east of U.S. 1 people) with bits of Eddie in the ocean and snuck into Mom's little room next to Daddy and the Grands.
I now live in Portugal. Lagos, Portugal to be exact, a beach town on the south coast much l...Expand for more
ike my beloved Lauderdale where I had a great circa 50's cottage for 18 years. I sold my upper middle class full of stuff I thought I needed house and just jumped on the plane. Now, three years later I now longer have diabetes 2, lost 80 pounds without dieting (yeah I was a cow), have socialized health care (Portugal may be broke, but it has money to take care of it's citizens and residents), grow organic vegetables, don't need a car as the bus goes everywhere at all hours. Speak fluent Con-ugese...not quite Portuguese yet. It's a good life, I do miss my Pams and my posse from Melbourne.
Oh, yeah...diagnosed bipolar...it's inherited (thanks Dad), so yeah, I was and still am crazy, for real.
Being a kid in Pompano was great! We had a waterfront fort, a pine forest fort, a sand dune fort. We had Frank the Cop herding us safely across Federal Hwy to get to McNabb and if we weren't there, he would check to see how we were. My brother Eddie would complain he could not get away with anything, people told my folks what he was doing almost before he did it. That is what Portugal is like for me now...fresh, clean and caring. After 40 years I am swimming again, back and forth. Love it so much I just rented an apartment next to the amazing Lagos pool complex. Oh, I need a new hip.
If you would like to follow my adventures, I write stories on my website:
Just google An Adventure Abroad
In closing, I really, really miss my best buddy Doug Pugh,
Happy Travels,
Constance
