Cora's Story

"Far above the distant landscape stands our Ruskin High ...Dear Old Ruskin, how we love thee ... We will e'er be true ... Gold and Royal Blue." Remember that song? I have such fond memories of RHS and the friends and activities I had there. I remember cheerleading, cheerleading camp at Ole Miss, and Pep Club. Remember singing on the Pep Club bus to "away" games ... "Hello darkness my old friend. I've come to talk with you again." RGAA. I would still love to play bombardment! Karen Ortega and I were in opposing gym classes. We were animals! We had an unwritten code that we would "save" each other for last and then battle it out at the end of the game. What a blast! Girls volleyball team. I sat on the bench my whole freshman year while the upper classmen of '65 and '66 showed me how it was done. Student Council. The school dances were so much fun and the music was incredible. The bands were great, can't remember them all -- The Shaylons, The Next of Kin, Ken Watson, Gary Cardile, Donnie Sanders, Ross Pinkepank. Once we turned 18, Debbie Mosby, Linda Hall and I enjoyed dancing at One Block West. Remember the "woodsies" we had? I was not a drinker, so I became the baby sitter. I made sure that those who passed out were put into cars for safe keeping, that no one was left passed out on the ground, and that everyone had a ride home. My favorite classes were Art, Science, English, and P.E. I wish I had paid more attention in World History. At the time I could not see the importance in it. My senior year my boyfriend and I skipped school so I could shop for my prom dress at Metcalf South. As we were going down the escalator, the Golden Eagle Band was coming up the escalator. Someone ratted on me and I got 8th hours. After graduation I worked as a Legal Secretary in the offices of Gant, Moran, and Hager. What a thrill to have a real paycheck. (When I was 15 I went to work for Gambles/Community Discount World near 87th and Blue Ridge after school and on weekends.) After graduation, three of my classmates, Debbie Mosby, Bruce Norman (miss you Bruce), and Susan McLeod carpooled with me as we crawled westward on I-70 to Downtown KC. I remember all of us dancing in our seats as the Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash played on the radio. I paid for parking at a multi-story garage. On my first day of work, I could hear my tires screaming as the parking attendant drove my Camaro up, up, up to park it. I had a little talk with him later. I was too young to appreciate "law" and stayed for only the summer. I had this belief that things were either right or wrong, black or white, etc. I have since learned that there is a lot of gray in this world. Then I worked as a secretary in Advertising and Sales Promotion at Seidlitz Paint Co., which later changed to Colony Paint Company, which later changed to Valspar. It's here that I learned to love advertising and honed my skills with English and proofreading/copy editing. They named a color after me -- Cora Rose. I don't know if the color is still available or not. There was a VP who was a member of Mensa and he loved his red pencil. He received a copy of all memos, letters, and press releases and circled any errors he saw and called you in to talk about it. I loved it! It didn't take long before he couldn't find any errors in my work. My boss, Chuc Barnes, was a wonderful person and mentor. The Marketing Dept. at Marion Laboratories needed a secretary. I think they hired me because I told them I lettered in volleyball in high school. At that time volleyball leagues played in an empty warehouse. Later, Mr. Kaufman bought the Baptiste Jr. High building and volleyball leagues played there. I took evening college classes at Longview, then Rockhurst and Avila. Got some good breaks and ended up in the Legal Division and then Regulatory Affairs working on New Drug Applications and approval of advertising and prescribing information for prescription drugs. e people. Business travel and working with ad agencies and the FDA were fun. Several Ruskin grads also worked there: Ron Bishop, Paula Duple, Mike Grimes, Mike Simpson, Paulette Swain Antone and Susan McLeod. The company went through several mergers and name changes -- Marion Merrell Dow, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Aventis and after I left, Sanofi Aventis. By the end of 2000, all jobs except manufacturing were transferred to New Jersey. I opted not to go and took the retirement package. I worked as a regulatory contractor for Teva Neuroscience for a year. It was then a division of Aventis. Also worked at an animal health ad agency for a short while. Now I am truly retired and I'm still having fun listening to music, going to Starlight Theatre and New Theatre, gardening, emailing special friends, scrapbooking, puttering around the house, and doing things with friends, family, and sorority sisters. Find me on face bk. I have lived in the Kansas City area since coming to the states from the Philippines when I was 3 1/2. My family moved to Ruskin Heights at the beginning of my 6th grade year. I remember being at Baptiste Jr. High when President Kennedy was assassinated. My first boy pal was Steve Werner in 6th grade. My first boyfriend was sweet, smart, funny Joe Iser. During my sophomore year, I was in Mr. Cochran's Geography class. A tall, thin, quiet guy sat in front of me. I would snap him with rubber bands just to make him talk. We became friends and before he went off to Vietnam he asked if he could write me. We became pen pals, nothing mushy, just friends. When he was on leave, if I wasn't going with someone, we would go out. Still, no spark. Little did I know that while he was in 'Nam he decided that he was going to make me his bride. He was an immature boy when he went into the service. The Army turned him into a man. We married in 1969 and had two wonderful sons, Mark and Mike. It didn't last forever and we divorced 22 years later. I have been active in Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 35 years. It's not affiliated with any college or university, is international, and is headquartered in Kansas City. It's a social sorority and it has been fun getting together once a month to go canoeing, see a musical, have a costume party, make a parade float, etc. We also do service projects locally and contribute to projects and charities on the state and national levels. Speaking of sisters, my sister PJ (Nin) lives in the Houston area and is as smart and beautiful as ever, little brother Joe lives in Tupelo, Miss., and brother Jim lives here in the metro area. I don't know if anyone remembers, but my little brother was born in 1966 and my sister and I took care of him while our parents were working. Several times we took Joey with us to basketball games and sneaked him into the Pep Club. I had him while PJ cheered for the JV game and then she took over when I cheered for the varsity game. We all had a great time. What's on the horizon? Travel. Doing my family scrapbooks. I have 60+ years of pictures to work with. Making my first quilt. Making blankets for the homeless. Getting rid of half of my life's accumulation in my home! I thank God each time that I wake up to a new day. I put off writing "my story" for a long time because I didn't think it mattered and I'm kind of a one-friend, private person. When someone signs my guest book and they have no picture and no story, I am disappointed. I am Aquarian, which makes me curious about things. Not nosy, just curious! So stop hiding! Post a picture and at least do the Q & A. It's easy. Then write your story. It doesn't have to be long and windy like mine! Put a copy of it in your family Bible or scrapbook or box of pictures. Your kids and grand kids will enjoy reading it. If you're still awake, thanks for reading this long and windy account of my life since RHS. It's hard to believe that 40+ years have passed. Gosh, I must be old!
