Cora's Story
Got an associate degree in nursing from Shenadoah college in Winchester ,va in 1965. Worked off my loan at winchester memorial hospital. Although I was against the Vietnam war I felt terrible the way our society was treating the returning soldiers so I went to work at the Bethesda naval hospital. Then a second child and impending divorce required I spend more time with my children so I went to work part time at the NIH. I really liked research, being on the cutting edge of development of bedside monitors, ICUs, laminar flow care, new treatments and drugs was exciting. image the heart in real time became the big focus. Our group won the global race to show echocardiography was a reliable effective tool to view and diagnose cardiac anatomy. That was really exciting and led to trips around the USA and abroad and then to university job offers. I ended up at the university of California at irvine south of LA in 1979. My two children and four grandchildren still live in this area. Lucky for me I stayed in the same house which since it was paid for allowed me to retire here otherwise this place would be too expensive. I've kept up with lots of old friends in Virginia and Maryland which I've love visiting with over the years. Both ends of the country have grown so much.
