Cordella's Story
I attended SPHS from 1955 until I graduated in 1968. I worked at the Ft. Yuma Indian Hospital as a File clerk before I relocated to Phoenix, AZ. I attended the Lamson Business College and completed my studies. I applied for a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and worked in the following Branches - Personnel, Education, Employment Assistance. Due to reorganization of the Bureau, I was reassigned to the ADP Branch. I remained in this Computer Operations Branch for 21 years. I retired in 2006. While working, I also attended night classes at Phoenix College.
In 1970, I met and married my husband who is a Hopi Indian from Old Oraibi, AZ. We have two sons. My oldest son and wife gave us 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. My youngest son and wife gave us 1 grandson and 1 step-granddaughter.
I have been in Phoenix for 40 years and hope to return to the Reservation in the near future.
After I retired, I did what most retirees do, cleaned my house! Then slowly I got bored so, I started to look for volunteer opportunities. I no longer go to Desert West Senior Center to volunteer but I go to Seniors Opportunities West and sew crafts and take blood pressure. I also just took a test to be able to be a food handler. Mainly, serving food to the disabled seniors.

ver to Project Linus as it is closer and I don't have to travel to Mesa to attend Bees. I am in the process of donating 15 more blankets on April 28. It has become easier to make and doesn't take much time to put these quilts together. I really enjoy donating my time and know that these blankets are going to a good cause.
My "me" time is going to the Casino, getting on the Internet, Reading and quilting. Watching television.

JANUARY 2014 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I deactivated my Facebook account because I want to concentrate on my sewing. It's been okay, I really don't miss it.
I'm still here in Phoenix, AZ I visit the rez several time a year and don't think I'll ever return to live there. I got my own home so at least I have a roof over my head. I am still actively volunteering. Sewing a lot of things for the Center and for our own little group. We went to the Rez to sell once and did pretty well.
In 2014, we are planning to sew quilts for a domestic violence center and also collect needed items for them. We hope to distribute these items several times throughout the year.
