Corky's Story
I went to Mt. Gleason Junior High School in Tujunga, CA, from 1978 to 1981 and to Verdugo Hills High School for just the first month of 10th grade in 1981 before I moved to Statesville, NC, and attended Statesville High School from 1981 to 1985. I really missed my friends back in CA when I moved but I made some great friends in NC, too.
After graduating with decent grades from Statesville but with no particular direction I wanted to go, I joined the Navy and became a nuclear mechanic on ballistic missile submarines. Talk about a hard life. Long hours and many months away from home convinced me that the Navy life was not for me. I got out in December 1991 at the end of my enlistment.
While on terminal leave (technically still enlisted but with the remainder of my enlistment spent on vacation) in Salisbury, NC, I met my now wife, Amy. In January 199...Expand for more
2, we moved to Raleigh, NC, and I attended NC State University. I received a BS in mechanical engineering in May 1995. After graduating, I did machine design work at a small hospital bed company in Greenville, SC, for a few years before moving to Virginia to work at Newport News Shipbuilding designing the power plant for the next generation aircraft carrier. Amy and I were married in July 2000.
Amy's grandfather's health took a turn for the worse in fall 2003 and we had wanted to move closer to family so we moved to Harrisburg, NC (near Lowes Motor Speedway). Amy's grandfather lived for another year or so, long enough to get to know our first son. We just had our second son in January 2008.
Now I'm working at Fluor in Charlotte designing power plants.
