Cortez's Story

I am a retired Combat Veteran of 26 years. My passion for service still burns hot in my bones. Although qualified as disabled, I desire to help rebuild and strengthen the lives of veteran service men and women who are now living civilian lives. My goals include developing job training, job placement, meal programs and raising funding required to supply the staffing and equipment necessary to serve veterans and my community. I plan to secure private, state and federal funding streams to support this venture. Once funding is in place it will be allocated to purchase the appropriate kitchen and dining area equipment, (e.g., stove, oven, dishwasher, tables, seating, etc.), front office equipment and training materials. The Veterans training curriculum will include front office operations and restaurant management. These areas will add marketable skills to each veteran’s portfolio, which in turn, will increase personal self worth, expand confidence levels and heighten their attractiveness as independent entrepreneurs to potential partners. Such a position could help them build a business of their own. At the very least, these veterans will gain a new or enhanced set of skills that will make them a highly qualified candidate for employment. At “Smoking Good Thingz” we produce the best combination of old fashioned southern/northern style barbeque, cooked at low temperatures for many hours to produce a stunner of the most flavorful, moist, tender, quality barbeque that one has ever tasted. We use only best the wood combination that brings out the robust richness and irresistible special blend of sweets, spices and love hand-rubbed into each piece. The process creates just the right balance of flavor that complements the smoked meat and keeps the customers coming back for more. It takes longer to prepare and slow-cook our meat – but anything worth having is certainly...Expand for more
worth waiting for. The outcome is unparalleled, ask anyone who has experienced the pleasure and what you’ll hear them say is “Smoking Good Thingz!”… I have a Bachelor of Science degree in project management. I believe this will help to refine my portfolio and provide me with razor sharp efficiency. I have been self employed in the catering business as head chef for the last five (11) years. I have mentored my daughters and trained them in honing their techniques as pastry chefs and expanded their knowledge in the art of Cajun and southern cuisines. It is evident that traditional employment is difficult in today’s market but it is that much more challenging for veterans - especially those with disabilities. However, the program I envision will help to eliminate the stereotypical unemployed veteran. Instead it will serve many veterans in need and help them to make productive contributions in civilian life as the many contributions made during their service years in the United State Armed Forces. I am happily married with two children in college, two in high school, and one in middle school. I have decided to be the example for the next generation through entrepreneurship. As I pave the financial way for my family my sons and daughters see a real example of making a difference by being that difference. My dream is to one day open a place of business that will enable me to provide my veteran brothers and sisters of combat a place to come, have a great meal and also participate in a great training environment that will increase their marketability. I know how it feels to return to civilian life – on the street, without friends, family and a roof over one’s head. The establishment I am building will provide a place where veterans can find comfort, comradery, and a welcome sense of competition in a family friendly environment. They can finally come home.
