Craig's Story
Greetings from Bloomington, Indiana! On August 17, 2008, I moved back to my hometown! This is the first time I have been a permanent resident of Bloomington since the summer of '82 --- 26 years ago! So for those of you who live in the Bloomington area, don't be surprised if you see me around town. It's good to be back!
I had such a great time seeing everyone who was at the Class of '82 25th Year Reunion Last Fall at Nick's. So I organized a 2007 Class of '82 Holiday Party last December at Nick's and a 2008 Class of '82 Summer Party at The Irish Lion and Crazy Horse in July.
The next Class of '82 event that I am organizing is our Homecoming Game Gathering on Friday September 26, 2008 at the BHSS Homecoming In Football Game. I hope you can join the fun in the bleachers with your Class of '82 classmates as we hang out together and cheer the Panthers to victory!
See Class of 1982 Events for more details.
Recently, at my Welcome Back To Bloomington party, our classmate, Tim Sheehan, asked me when I started to grow tall in high school. When I was a freshman at BHSS I was only 5'-5" and bullies picked on me. I was a late bloomer and didn't start getting significantly taller until I was 15. By the time I was a senior at South, I was 6'-3" and the tallest boy in the school --- nobody was taller than me and the bullies said "excuse me" and got out of my way when I walked down the crowded corridors of our high school. The only student who was as tall as me by our senior year was a girl, Sharon Staum. I grew one more inch taller during my freshman year of college and I am now 6'-4".
In 1978, during the fall of our freshman year at South, there was no official school soccer team, so I was a fullback on the Arsenals, a private soccer team composed of boys from Bloomington South and North high schools who traveled to other cities and towns in Indiana to play rival teams. My South teammates on the Arsenals included Bill Adam, Kevin Moran, Chris Paddock, and Pete Cates.
At South, my one and only official school activity was the school newspaper, The Optimist. I began as a reporter and worked my way up to Art Editor and drew illustrations and cartoons for the paper. During my senior year, I was the Art Editor and Entertainment Editor of The Optimist and wrote movie reviews and music album reviews.
During the summer of 1982, I was a volunteer DJ at Indiana University free form cable radio station WQAX. "Quacks," as the station was commonly called, featured a wide variety of music and thousands of LPs. At that time, I was thrilled to discover countless new, punk, reggae, and ska bands and solo artists that I had never heard before.
Some of the teenage DJs at WQAX who I met were in a surf punk band called Moto-X, along...Expand for more
with a couple of older musicians, Frankie Camaro on lead guitar and back up vocals and Jim Stafford on drums. Suddenly, Moto-X was playing live at a party in my basement! Moto-x also featured Ross Danielson on lead vocals (BHSS Class of '83), Greg Phillips on bass (BHSS Clas of '82), and John Taylor on rhythm guitar (BHSN Clas of '83). It was way cool and a hell of a lot of fun to have a rock and roll band, especially a local young surf punk group, play at my party.
I began attending the University of Missouri: Columbia after high school and did food service work at the Catalpa Tree Vegetarian Cafe and Ernies Steakhouse. I was a reporter for the student newspaper, The Maneater(interviewed the Violent Femmes), a disc jockey at community radio stations, KOPN in MIssouri and WQAX in Bloomington, the founder, editor, publisher, artist, and reporter of Scream magazine (I interviewed members of Black Flag and Sonic Youth), and lead vocalist/songwriter for a punk rock band, Lurking Fear. To hear our songs and see pictures of my band, Google search "lurking fear the band" and you'll find our website. We also have a page on myspace that I currently manage.
After I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Social Work in 1986, I was a Life Skills instructor working with developmentally disabled adults at Woodhaven, a residential facility near Columbia, MO.
In 1987 I moved to San Francisco and worked as an instructor of community-integrated developmentally disabled adults.
From 1990-1996, I was a graduate student at San Francisco State University, where I received my teaching credentials and a Master of Arts degree in History. For 6 years, I was a substitute teacher and summer school teacher in San Francisco public schools (I worked at high schools whose former students include Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, and Maya Angelou). I was also a Social Studies & Language Arts teacher in Redwood City, CA.
I attended Golden Gate University School of law in San Francisco from 1999 to 2002. During law school my activities included summer internships and clerkships included the United States Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor, and two law firms. I was also President of the Employment Law Association.
I graduated from law school and recieved my law degree in 2002. After passing the California bar exam didn't pan out, I did a variety of office temp jobs in San Francisco and moved to Denver in 2004 where I found work doing tech support at call centers.
In 2005, following a serious auto accident and back surgery, I began working as a Legal Assistant at the law firm of Darrell S. Elliott, a persoanl injury firm in Denver. I began my state government Legal Assistant job in 2006 which ended in 2008.
