Craig's Story
Upon graduating I went to Mizzou for one year but since I had to pay my way through college I came back and graduated from UMKC. I dated Lynn Hoare, class of 71, for about two years after she graduated. For nine years I taught English at a junior high in the Hickman Mills District. At the same time I joined the KCPD as a reserve officer and worked one night each week on patrol after graduating from the academy’s night training school for reserves.
I gained a lot of media attention in September, 1982, for working a surveillance for and capturing a serial rapist who became known as the Westport Rapist.
In 1984 I left teaching to go full time with KCPD. I had a lot of great assignments but got the most satisfaction from patrol work.
In 1993 I was promoted to sergeant and supervised a lot of very dedicated and brave officers.
In December, 1995 I was loaned over to the Kansas City Crime Commission to run the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers (better known on TV news as the TIPS HOTLINE) where I worked the final 13 years...Expand for more
of my career. In that capacity I worked with agencies at all levels in the metro area and was proud to be a part of solving some of the area’s most high profile crimes including the Precious Doe case and the Ali Kemp and Kelsey Smith homicides.
My homely face was on tv news pretty regularly doing interviews on crimes during that time.
In December of 2008 I retired from KCPD and spent the next 10 years working part time with the Crime Commission publishing its Kansas City’s Most Wanted newspaper. At the same time I was Chief of Event Security for Rockhurst High School.
In 2009 I followed the advice of my English teachers from Southwest and pursued my dream of writing a novel and my book, A.D., is still available on Amazon.
In 1977 I married Trish, O’Hara class of 71, and we are still going strong almost 47 years later. We have one son, Michael, who works for Farmers Insurance and is a member of the Center School District Board of Education. We are the grandparents of Lincoln, 8, and Owen, 9, who is a cancer survivor,
