Craig's Story
Craig's schools include Ravenswood High School. Now Retired After graduation I started at Glenville State College for 7 consecutive semesters when I ran out of loans and scholarships. I applied at the Jackson County Schools for a janitors position until I could earn enough money to continue with school. The Superintendent looked at my application and refused to hire me as a Janitor, instead he told me to go to Gilmore School and tell them I was the new teacher. Thus I began my Teaching Career in the fall of 1967. I transferred my credits to Morris Harvey college so that I might go to school of the evenings and work during the day. On June 7 1968 I marred my wife.. When I finished my Bachelors Degree I immediately started on my Masters Degree in Educational Administration and in the fall of 1973 I started as Principal of Cottageville Elementary School where I remained until the Spring of1985 I had the offer of a school about twice the size of the one I had and more money. So in the fall of 1985 I began as Principal of Franklin Elementary in Pendleton County. We rented for about 4 months and then decided to buy the family farm, about 400 acres of which about half was arable We ran about 50 sheep and 25 cows so we had to rent more pasture land. Luckily the school was a very good one with few problems with either Staff or students. cided that while the farm was paying for itself and a little more, that we needed a cash crop to provide our income, We chose to build two 400 ft chicken houses for Perdue Company to provide hatch eggs for them. they would provide the stock and the feed we were to provide the housing and the work. We gathered an average of l6,000 eggs a day. Sharon did the majority of the collecting and I did most of the inside the houses work. Consequently over the period of eight years I contracted one of the disease one can get from working in a chicken house. So without my working inside we would have to sell out Having retired from the Pendleton County Schools,we then went to Chesapeake Va. near our Daughter. We have two children a Daughter who is 45 and has two children 26 and 27, and one Grandson who is 3 going on 30. We have a son who is 38 and has a daughter who is 8 yrs old He and his Fiance are planning their wedding for not too far in the future. Not wanting to sit back and twiddle my thumbs I began looking for a job that would not require too much Physical labor. I found one as manager of a convenience store. I worked this job until my lungs became so compromised that I had to have oxygen full time.
