Craig's Story
Life
Another year has passed. From a career standpoint, I am still a doctor that cares for children with cancer and blood diseases (Pediatric hematologist-oncologist). I also function as the Pediatric Director of Hospice in Lee County, Florida. After leaving YVHS, I went to the University of California, Berkeley (B.S., Chemistry, 1981), followed by Washington University School of Medicine (M.D., Ph.D., 1987). Years more training (Children's Hospital Los Angeles) resulted in my current career path. Initially, I was on the medical school faculty at Washington University and St. Louis Children's Hospital. I ran a research laboratory that identified and cloned genes involved in breast cancer, and taught medical students and hematology-oncology fellows. One of those life-changing moments occurred in 1999, when my grants for my research were not renewed. The research was exciting, but the pay was poor and the hours were long. I decided to leave academic medicine and move to Florida to be a clinical doctor in my specialty. I currently work in Fort Myers, Florida. usually do very well, and their energy and enthusiasm make my work rewarding.
My wife Jeri and I recently celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. I met her at Children's Hospital Los Angeles when I was a resident and she was a nurse (nothing like Gray's Anatomy or Scrubs TV shows). We have two children. Erin is 18 years old, and is attending Florida State University. Go Noles! My son Christopher is 13 years old. He is very different from Erin. Intellectually, he has more mental horsepower, but he is less focused and less goal oriented. Jeri spends large amounts of time making sure that Christopher gets his school work done. attends a private non-religious school (K-8) in Fort Myers.
Jeri is a nurse by education and training, but works part time in the influenza season administering vaccinations to the elderly in Florida.
My hobby is still ice hockey. I am now playing 2 nights a week, but no longer coach. I swim daily and play golf occasionally (18 handicap golfer in possession of many putters--none of which work).
Our family "vacations" have been few and far between. We will be spending the winter holidays in Park City,Utah.
