Curt's Story

11/9/14 Life has, in general, been good. I'm divorced (married for 27 years) and the proud dad of two beautiful daughters. The older (42) works as a psychologist in Fremont, CA (just north of San Jose) as well as a full time mommy to my 8 y.o. grandson who is a TOTAL hoot! I make it a point to see him about once per month and we have a ball together. The younger (39) worked as a RN in a NICU in San Diego. She too, is now a full time mommy to my granddaughter (also 8 y.o.). She now works doing cosmetic injections (botox and lip plumping and has a growing business). I don't see them enough. For many years I'd enjoyed skiing, swimming, and bicycling. That was until I had a near fatal bike accident (the car won - I beat the docs odds as they gave me a 75% chance of dying). Things haven't been quite the same since (the gruesome details are available upon request) but, I do what I can. So as to avoid another such accident I returned to the pool last spring and swim about 7 miles per week. The toughest part of the swimming is remembering what it was like as a 19 year old speedster. I am becoming more accepting of being 70. I attended two universities, CSU Chico for my bachelors degree ('71) and CSU Hayward for my masters degree in physiology ('07) ... going to grad school was fantastic and was a life changing experience as it changed my thinking profoundly. I highly recommend furthering YOUR education. With the exception of a 6 year period when I had owned a waterbed store, I taught high school biology for 34 years and retired from public schools in June, '10. I retired from teaching a year earlier than planned as I landed a job coaching at a small NCAA Division II school in Salem, West Virginia. WVa was fantastic! But, the job didn't work out and I quit after about one year. As of this moment, I'm pretty much retired and loving it. After all those years of working mega (60 to 80) hours per week, it is great waking up when I want to and doing jobs around the house as I see fit. While in grad school, I developed a scienti...Expand for more
fic theory that explains athletic performance based on physics, muscle cell function and blood chemistry. I present my discoveries to coaches at coaching clinics in the hope of affecting how they train their swimmers to race and practice (even had Michael Phelps' coach in one of my audiences). Update 11/1/16. I was hired by Chaffey College as the head women's swim coach. This is a great opportunity in Rancho Cucamonga (on the way to San Bernardino and just north of Ontario airport). The really cool thing about the job is that it is only 4.5 months out of the year. So, I'll spend my winters in SoCal and return to my house near Sacramento the other months. I'll also be close to my younger daughter and grand daughter during swim season and I'll still be able to visit my other daughter & grand son during the other months. Update on the SoCal job ... 6/16 ... They loved the job I did. The girls set 5 school records. The classes I taught went great. They decided to add some classes to the department and wanted me to teach them in the fall semester but, that was NOT why I took the job. All I wanted was to teach/coach for the one semester per year. I said 'no' and they said too bad, adios! More on the update ... I recently got my first scientific research paper published. It took about a year to do the research, write and edit it. I'M STOKED! I currently live in Orangevale, CA which is about 20 miles East of Sacramento and is adjacent to Folsom (of Johnny Cash's prison song fame). The rolling oak studded hills in the area are beautiful and lead up the the Sierra Nevada. Lake Tahoe (and snow skiing) is only about 90 miles away. I love it around here. The color picture is from 5/19. The black/white (w/ an old g-friend -HI WEND!) is circa 1968. My, what difference 52 years makes. I hope you enjoyed the contrast as much as I did. With hope, your life has been good to you and you'll take a moment to drop a line. Regards to all ... my personal email is academicjock at yahoo dot com and it would be great to hear from you.
