Cyndy's Story
College:
Went to Glendale Community College and earned an early childhood teaching certificate, earned a BS in Speech and Hearing Science from ASU, worked on a Master's degree in Teacher of the Visually Impaired from U of A and finished 1/2 of the coursework, but quit when my mom got cancer and then decided to let that go and focus on speech therapy again, which I did for 10 years at Foundation for Blind Children. Previously to going to college in my 30s, I worked at FBC as a teaching assistant. After graduating, I worked as an early interventionist (developmental specialist) for families who had babies with visual impairments. Our oldest is visually impaired, so started at FBC as a parent first.
Workplace:
I worked at Foundation for Blind Children since my oldest son attended 1st grade and He is nearly 45 years old now! After letting my speech therapy license lapse, I worked for the State of Arizona as a support coordinator at two different locations. I worked for a few therapy companies too, but went back to the state because I'm a glutton for misery, I guess. Retired from there right before the pandemic and now am volunteering where I started as a young mom at Foundation for Blind Children's baby program.
Personal:
Been married to Steve Bensema since October 1975- actually we married on the very same day Bill & Hillary married- haha! We have two sons, Nick, born in 1977 and Trevor, born in 1979. They both went to college and are employed, which is wonderful in this hard economic time period! Our oldest, Nick, bought a house in Tempe and works as a computer programmer/engineer. Trevor works as a Principle Data Analyst, Resource Utilization Analyst in Phoenix for health care companies. He's between jobs now, so have forgotten his company's name. He also has shared custody of his beautiful precocious daughter who recently finished 7th grade! I absolutely LOVE being a GRANDMA! Steve and I both love to spend as much time with this bundle of energy and fun. ...Expand for more
She was in gymnastics for a few years, but started cheer competition 2 years ago and loves that even more! Currently she is in Europe with her mom on a wonderful vacation. Lucky girl!
We live in N. Phoenix near Trevor & Trinity, and not too far from her mom too.
My parents have died, and Steve's parents are still living in Scottsdale in a tri-level home so he is over there a lot helping. They are 91 and have been married 72 years! Both are visually impaired due to macular degeneration. Visual impairments follow me.
I love doing my family genealogy and a few summers ago, I traced my Italian side back to the 1700s in Sicily! Everyone that teased me about my family being in the Mafia was not too far off. I have found no proof of THAT yet though, but have a lot of the common Mafia names in my family tree...married into the family, not BLOOD! haha! Also have done my mom's side and have Mayflower roots as well. Daughter of the American Revolution AND second generation Sicilian-American!
Other:
My Classmates.com account will be running out again in a few months, and will not be renewing it. If you want to get ahold of me, Facebook is the best way right now. So make a friend with me on FB if you want! I've got a good memory (so far) I've already been in touch with a lot of old friends on FB (not that YOU are old! haha) and it has been fun!
There are a few FB groups dealing with Saguaro activities. Recently the Class of 1976 invited all the 70s classes to their reunion. We went for a little time, but we were moving the next day, so we only stayed a little while. Hoping more activities will be announced. Join the Saguaro Baby Boomer Page or the Saguaro 73 Reunion page. Not much is happening on there now, but there are pics of the reunion from 2013 and it was a fun place to connect before the reunion.
Hope this finds all my OLD friends doing well! I still am not a member of Classmates anymore. I am on Facebook, so meet up with me there if you want! :)
