Cynthia's Story
Life
The day after graduation from West Side in 1970, my mother, sister and I moved to Arlington, VA, where my mother and I worked for the U.S. Army in the Pentagon (Mother's office was located in the area where the plane struck in the 9/11 terrorist attack). We moved to Independence, MO about a year later to be closer to my mother's family. I left Independence in 1972 to go to college in Southern California where I met and married my kids' dad. I lived there 18 years before returning to Independence, MO.
We had three children, a girl, then two boys. My daughter and youngest son are in their 20s. My older son died on 8/13/2004 in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20. My daughter is the mother of my grandson, Aaron who was born in 2002. My son is father to 3 girls, Zoey (2013), Shea (2016) and Mia (2020).
I worked in the IT field for over 25 years, both as a system administrator and a consultant to non-profit organizations, including public transportation and public libraries.
I love to read, mess with my computer, take walks, listen to all kinds of music (particularly classical or jazz), and spend lots of time with grandchildren.
School
I had two teachers that really inspired me to do my best. One was Mr. Folensbee (English, may he rest in peace) and the other was Paul Fasso, the choir teacher who...Expand for more
retired in 1968 or 1969. My craziest school memory was the senior prank the year they put the tires in the inner courtyard on the westside of the school. The greatest sports memory was when Roger Wong shot the basketball at the buzzer from the other side of mid-court and it was all net. West Side went to the city playoffs that year. It was great!
College
B.S. degree in Management
MBA (master's in business administration) from Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University along with Graduate Certificate in Project Management.
MPA (master's in public administration) from Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University with emphasis in Healthcare Management. My kids call me a "perpetual" student because I love to learn and it seems like I am always studying something.
Workplace
Spent over 25 years working in HP3000 computer systems administration. Retired from a pharmacy benefit manager. Worked part-time at the IRS and now retired and working part-time at a grocery store as a customer service office assistant. Enjoying lots of time off!
Military
I am a Navy brat. Both my mother and father are Navy veterans of the Korea era. Dad was a radioman on the USS New Jersey (sister ship to the USS Missouri on which the Japanese surrendered in WWII). Mom was one of the original Navy W.A.V.E.s.
