Cynthia's Story

Life My LIFE'S bio? It seems I've been married for most of my life to my high school sweetheart, Jim Clagett. We married in '74 after I finished radiology tech school, and that's when he started dental school. Upon his graduation, we moved to Chelmsford, MA for 2 years. After his associateship, we came home with our son, Matthew, now 37. Jim opened his practice in Jan., 1980. By 1984, we had 3 more kids; Sara, now 35, Paul, 33, and Annie, 31. Matt is a computer tech and works for Omitron. Some of his duties include monitoring the International Space Station as well as work at NOAA, Sara is a graphic designer, now married, lives in Edgewater with her husband and 2 daughters, Lily, age 9 years and Sadie, 8. Paul is getting his Wilderness Rescue EMT certification in California, and Anne is married with a 6 year old son, Mason, a 4 year old son, Logan, and another boy is due in October, She was a kindergarten teacher in Severna Park and retired to stay home with her boys. I stayed home with my children until 1993 when I first started working for Jim, part time. In 2003, we moved our business, still within Burwood Village, to a new building and expanded our practice. I have been full time for some years.. I have a wonderful life with Jim, and we have 4 great kids who like hanging with their parents. Becoming grandparents in 2006 makes parenting worth it because it is the greatest joy we have ever known. (better than having our own kids) Now, four times the joy, almost 5! My dear Mother passed away in September '06. Thankfully, she didn't suffer and there has been restoration in our family. My brother, Larry passed away in August, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Jim and I are attend church with Annie and her family, at Lighthouse. As far as any other interests, we see friends often, go to shows and concerts, and we still grocery shop together. I think I hear you groaning right about now. It was, in the beginning of our marriage and still is, our date night. But we have a lot more date nights now that the kids are grown. 41 years and counting . Jim and I travel every year to Paradise Island in the Bahamas. In November, we took all our kids and grandkids wi...Expand for more
th us and it was a blast! This year, we'll go with our best friends, Janet (May) and Matt Ziemski. Turning 50 was a little scary, but as I creep into my 60s, I'm realizing that life is what you make of it. Attitude is everything. Turning 60? Who cares. Becoming a grandmother? Bring it on! Retirement? Set up my chair so that I can watch the sunsets! School Do you all remember Sister Julius Marie At Holy Trinity? Scary!! As tough as she could be, she was fair. I respected that about her. But mostly, I hated the nuns. I would NEVER want to repeat those years! However, despite that my heart was broken and, later, my spirit shattered, I learned so much. Such incidences were character building. In large part, I am who I am today because of these experiences. But, no, I wouldn't do it again. College I went to South Baltimore General Hospital's School of Radiology. It was a 2 year program. We had classes and worked at the same time. I particularly liked the evening shift. We never knew what we'd get next from the ER. It was always exciting! Workplace After graduating from South Baltimore, I worked at the U of MD Hospital for 3 years. I worked in all aspects of the xray field, but mostly, in mammography. And I loved it! It was a much more personal and emotional part of my job. Most women were scared to death that they had breast cancer, and I took that very seriously. It wasn't only my job to take the xrays, but to put them at ease, honor their dignity, and, occassionally, embrace them when they broke down. I insisted on the same behavior from my students. It was a wonderful, fulfilling job. I have worked for Jim as his office administrator for years. While it involved accounts payable and receivables, and personnel issues, I considered it my job as well as that of my assistants, to be ambassadors for our practice. Most people dread being in a dental office, so it's up to us to greet each one and make them feel welcome. 99.9% of patients come out having had a really good experience. We laugh alot, share stories about our families, and grieve when a patient or the family member of a patient passes away. We're like family. Military SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
