Cynthia's Story

Life Cynthia Lawrence is a regular guest of leading opera companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera (Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus), Lyric Opera of Chicago (Mourning Becomes Electra, Elettra in Idomeneo, Countess Olga in Giordano's Fedora, The Italian Singer in Strauss's Capriccio, Musetta in La Boheme, Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito, Micaela in Carmen, Rosalinda, and Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte), Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, New Israeli Opera, Opera Pacific, and Opera Colorado (Lady Macbeth in Verdi's Macbeth), Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Musetta), Paris Opera (Vitellia), Grand Theatre de Geneva (Rosalinda), Minnesota Opera (Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro), Opera Ontario and Lake George Opera (Cio-Cio-San), Opera Columbus (Rosalinda), Athens Festival (Elettra), New York City Opera (Rosalinda, Cio-Cio-San, Musetta), Vlaamse Opera (Rosalinda), Opera Omaha (Micaela, Liu), Central City Opera (Marguerite, Micaela, Mimi), and Colorado Opera Festival, Opera Memphis, Opera Enschede Holland, and Santander Festival Spain(Donna Anna in Don Giovanni). This last season, she returned to the Metropolitan Opera to sing performances of Cio-Cio-San, her first Tosca and Dolly in Sly and later that year was featured in the Met‘s Opening Night Gala with Mo. Levine conducting. She also made her debut with the Washington Opera as Elettra in Idomeneo at The Washington Opera with Placido Domingo and returned as Rosalinda for the Metropolitan Opera. Her summer debut with Opera Theater of St. Louis’ production of Tosca was a magical success, as was her Butterfly with Connecticut Opera. repertoire and summer performances with the Met in the Parks. She then returns next fall to Washington Opera for Mini in Fanciulla del West with Placido Domingo, and the World Premiere of Bolcom’s A Wedding at the Lyric Opera Chicago. Ms. Lawrence first attracted international attention in 1990 as the winner of the International Mozart Vocal competition, exciting audiences at the Vienna Staatsoper, Paris and Rome with her performances of arias from Cosi fan Tutte and La Clemenza di Tito, accompanied in concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Other notable concert appearances by Ms. Lawrence include a staged version of Alban Berg's beautiful and rarely performed Der Wein with the Grand Theatre Geneve, Strauss' Vier Letzte Lieder for the Colorado Music Festival, Rossini's Stabat Mater for the Columbus Symphony, Mozart concert arias with the Colorado Music Festival, gala New Year's Eve concerts and performances of Verdi's Requiem in Utah, a Mozart Requiem at the Hollywood Bowl, and a concert at the Ravinia Festival. She appears frequently in concert with Luciano Pavarotti throughout the world, having last performed with him for the World Forum on Peace and Economics in Malaysia last fall. Other venues include such cities as Modena, Spoletto and Alba, Italy; Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Concepcion, South America; Birmingham, Leeds Castle and London, England; Edmonton, Hamilton and Montreal, Canada; and Las Vegas, St. Louis, Austin, Dallas, San Jose, Columbus, Portland, Atlantic City, Denver and New York City. She has also appeared with him in two televised broadcasts on PBS: "Live from Lincoln Center" concert " Pavarotti Plus!" in 1989, a live concert from Miami Beach in 1995, and on a 1995 PBS special "Pavarotti: My World."
