Cynthia's Story
Life
After working at Hewlett-Packard for 13 years, I left in 2000 to start my own company, Fig Street Marketing Group. We just celebrated our five year anniversary and now have offices across the U.S.
I own four horses - Earl Grey (15 year old, dark brown, 16.1 hand Thoroughbred), Manhattan (11 year old, chestnut, 16 hand Thoroughbred), Darco (9 year old, chestnut, 16.1 hand Belgian Warmblood) and Markus (7 year old, bay, 17 hand, Hanoverian Warmblood). I compete in show jumping.
I am still single and live in my own home in West Covina with my dog, Stella Luna, and my cat, KC. Both are adorable.
Just recently, I spent three incredible weeks in Ireland, which has been a lifelong dream. I can't wait to go back.
I spend most of my time traveling with my work and going to horse shows. I also go to see as many plays as I can work into my schedule and have recently found I love going to the opera. Who knew?? Movies and books have always been a passion and I have a library full of both.
Not much else to report.
Workplace
My company, Fig Street Marketing Group, is one of the joys of my life. When I accepted the severence package from Hewlett-Packard in 2000, my plan was to generate enough business to support myself, my two cats and my two horses. I turned ...Expand for more
the entire downstairs of my condo into my office. My cats and I made up the marketing "group". Five years later, I have operations in West Covina, Venice, Colorado, Arizona, Wisconsin, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. Our customers span across the U.S., Canada, Latin America and Europe.
I'm incredibly blessed with the team that has come on board over the years. Each and every one is an amazing person with extraordinary talents. As we have grown, we've been able to maintain our philosophy of working to live rather than the norm of living to work. I see this company as an umbrella under which my team can make a contribution in their workplace but also have the flexibility to reach for their dreams. In fact, our logo, a lovely tree, symbolizes just that. I can honestly say, I've never been happier or more fulfilled. I don't have a family myself, but I consider my employees my "kids" and I couldn't be prouder of them. We've doubled (or more) each year without any marketing or selling efforts (there's never been time!) which goes to show that joy in your work really does pay off. It's never been about the money and yet the business continues to be successful. I look at us as the antithesis of corporate America. Joy, love and community first. Everything else just follows.
