Cynthia's Story

I got married the first time at age 18, straight after graduation, to Jim Schneider. That marriage lasted 5 years, with us living in Garden Grove, and then Westminster, CA, for a while. After I left Jim, I lived for a while with Bill Goodykoontz, in Huntington Beach, CA. Bill was a teacher I met in a workshop at Goldenwest College. I attended Goldenwest College for a couple of years, studying art, psychology, and dance, where I met Dan Shapiro, a choreographer who directed a piece I performed there. I eventually moved to NYC to live with my Dan. We got married, but that didn't last too long, and he ran off with another dancer. Shortly after he left, I met Nicholas Lorimer, who became the father of both of my sons, Alex and Max. We all moved to Brooklyn, NY, in 1988. We were married exactly 10 years before divorcing. I met my current husband, Lou Rosenberg, through a mutual friend, and we have been together for 15 years now, though we only married 4 years ago. We couldn't get married before that because my son, Max, is autistic, and I couldn't get married before he turned 18 without losing his Medicaid and SSI benefits. Max still lives with me and Lou, and attends a Day-Hab program daily, in Brooklyn. They are still looking for a job that Max both enjoys, and is good at. My older son, Alex, is an architect, living in Brooklyn with his girlfriend. Although I originally moved to New York to be a dancer, I quickly learned that the real life day to day grind of that lifestyle was not for me, so I went back to college and got a degree in psychology. I had intended on going further in my studies to get a PhD in psychology, but when my second son was born with autism, I pretty much put that on the back burner. By then, I had become a successful medical illustrator and computer artist, so I wasn't really too interested in going back to school, but I still always had it in the back of my m...Expand for more
ind that I would one day like to be a counselor, of some sort. Which pretty much leads to me to where I am today... I think the most surprising thing about me is that I am an Ordained Interfaith Minister! After 15 years of sobriety, following what seemed like a lifetime of addiction and suffering, it became clear that my spiritual path was leading me toward a life of doing service in some meaningful way, of helping people. I am still an artist, and have, in fact, been making a living as an artist for over 25 years, but now I have added minister to my palette, and I like the colors that are coming out of it all. I hope to use my ministry to not only do things like weddings, baby blessings, funerals, etc., but I also want to use it to do spiritual counseling. My life has been interesting, and hard in so many ways, but all the things that have happened to me have also brought me an amazing deep intuition and knowing of how I can be of service in the world. I want to do that! My ministry is not about religion of any sort, so much as it is about living a spiritual life, and an ethical life, with the intention of being a light in the darkness, a spreader of Love. I hope that I can do some of that every day. I spend most of my days painting dolls now, which I sell on eBay and from my web site. It's a sort of strange way to make a living, but it has been really fun, too, and I have become world-renowned as a doll artist. I go to 3 or 4 conventions every year, where I sell my work, and in between that, I do my spiritual counseling, and weddings, when I can get them. I think that about covers it and brings me up to date. Mostly, I'd just like to say how very grateful I am to be alive, and to have the life I live now. There were so many times when I didn't think I was going to make it, but I am still grateful for all of it, because it brought me to where I am now. And where I am now is GOOD!
